American Justin Gatlin was second and was 0.02 faster than Canadian Andre de Grasse. The Canadian was in turn 0.02 seconds faster than Jamaican Yohan Blake who finished just 0.01 seconds ahead of South African Akani Simbine. Fine margins indeed. Usain Bolt also won gold in the 200 meters race.

Tori Bowie of the United States finished in second place beating Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica into third place by 0.03 seconds. Another Jamaican athlete, Christania Williams, finished in fourth place with the same time as Fraser-Pryce. Asha Philip and Desiree Henry both from Great Britain were eliminated in the semi finals. Elaine Thomson also won gold in the 200 meters race.

The times of the second, third and fourth placed athletes were 11.12, 11.18 and 11.19 seconds respectively.
