Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1988, Kansas entered the NCAA Tournament with a questionable 6th seed. Facing a 24-3 Xavier team in the first round, they set off on a quest to the National Championship. What was the nickname given to the basketball team?

Answer: Danny & the Miracles

Danny Manning was the Naismith winner in 1988, and was the NCAA tournament's Most Outstanding Player. They went through 3 teams that had previously beaten them earlier that year; Duke, Kansas State, and the NCAA runner-up, Oklahoma.
2. In the 1996-97 season, Kansas set a single-season winning percentage record. How many wins did they record in that season?

Answer: 34

The 1996-97 team went 34-2 with losses against Missouri in 2OT and a loss to Arizona in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament.
3. Who was the coach at the University of Kansas from 1898-1907?

Answer: James Naismith

The creator of basketball chose the University of Kansas to be head coach of.
4. What was the score for the 2003 National Championship game, and who did Kansas lose to?

Answer: 81-78; Syracuse

Syracuse came out red hot, with Gerry McNamara hitting six 3-pointers in the first half. A tragic blow came the Jayhawks way when Keith Langford had a questionable 5th foul called on him. I still say that if Hakim Warrick did not tip Michael Lee's potential game-tying 3 out of bounds, it would have gone in and they would have gone to overtime.
5. What player after the 2006-07 season, declared for the NBA draft, but revoked his declaration due to an ACL injury sustained in a pick-up game?

Answer: Brandon Rush

Brandon was the leading scorer his freshman and sophomore years at KU. Wright declared, and was taken 12th in the draft by New Orleans.
6. Name the player that wore the #0 jersey for the first time in Jayhawk basketball history.

Answer: Drew Gooden

Drew Gooden wore that jersey from 2000-02, leaving college for the pros after his junior season. He was the first person to wear that number. Ostertag wore #00, later worn by Darrell Arthur. Vaughn wore #11, and little known Terry Nooner wore the #5 jersey.
7. This player scored 52 points in his college debut in 1956, a Kansas single-game record, and led a 1957 team to a 3OT loss in the NCAA championship game against UNC.

Answer: Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt thought that the Kansas faithful would be angry with him, so he cut all ties with Kansas and played for the Harlem Globetrotters for a year, before fulfilling his territorial pick for the Philadelphia Warriors. He scored 100 points in a 169-147 victory over the New York Knicks in Hershey, PA, and his most famous feat, as Wilt told it, was sleeping with over 20,000 women.
8. How many conference championships did Kansas win in the 100 years of conference play?

Answer: 50

Kansas, with their Big XII championship in 2007, won their 50th total conference championship, putting them slightly ahead of Kentucky at 49.
9. In what year did Kansas win their first national championship?

Answer: 1922

The Kansas team, led by coach F.C. "Phog" Allen, won the Helms Foundation National Championship, thus becoming the first national championship for the University of Kansas basketball team. The 1952 and 1988 teams also won national titles, but the 2003 team was runner-up to Syracuse.
10. In the 2004-05 season, the Jayhawks went all the way to the Elite Eight. What four teams did they play in that NCAA tournament, and what seeds were they?

Answer: Pacific, UIC, UAB, Georgia Tech; 12, 13, 9, 3

Kansas was handed an easy road to the Elite Eight, with Pacific beating #5 seed Providence in the first round, and UAB beating overall #1 seed Kentucky in the second round. Kansas finally fell to Georgia Tech in the Elite Eight in OT.
