Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first race of the 1994 season was Brazil and was won by Michael Schumacher. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Second Place

Damon's teammate for 1994 Ayrton Senna was on pole. Senna had the lead from the start but lost it to Schumacher after the first pit stop. Damon started the race in 4th place. By the 55th lap Senna and Schumacher were so far ahead they lapped Damon who was running in third place.

However, Senna spun off that lap and Damon was too far behind to chase down the leader, and had to settle for second place. Schumacher was the only driver to finish on the lead lap that race. Only 12 out of 28 drivers finished that race.

A first place was worth 10 points and a second place was worth 6 points.
2. The second race of the 1994 season was the Pacific Grand Prix and was was won by Michael Schumacher. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Retired

Damon qualified in third place for the race with his teammate on pole and Schumacher in second. Lady luck was not on Damon's side this race and he had to retire from the race on the 49th lap with a transmission problem. His teammate did worse by colliding on the first lap and having to retire too. Schumacher received 10 points for the win while Damon got zero points for the retirement.

After two races, Damon was already 14 points behind Schumacher in the title race.
3. The third race of the 1994 season was San Marino. The race was won by Michael Schumacher in tragic circumstances. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Sixth place

Lady Luck was not around for this race. The 1994 Imola race will go down in history as the blackest day Grand Prix racing can remember. The tragic weekend started with a qualifying crash that claimed the life of Roland Ratzenberger, and the race itself will always be remembered for the death of Ayrton Senna. Damon started the race in 4th place.

The race was run in two parts after Senna's crash, and the results were determined by aggregate. Damon finished one lap down in 6th place and earned 1 point. Schumacher received 10 points for the win, giving him 30 points from 3 races. Damon had only 7 points from the first three races.
4. The fourth race of the 1994 season was Monaco. Schumacher won yet again. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Retired

Lady Luck was once more not on Damon's side on this race day. This time he retired due to a first lap collision involving Mika Hakkinen, Gianni Morbidelli, and Pierluigi Martini. Schumacher left Monaco with 10 more points, taking his total to 40 while Damon scored another zero. By the end of race 4, Damon was now trailing by 33 points.
5. After winning in Spain at the fifth race in 1994 and securing 10 points, Damon and the guys moved on to round six in Canada. Schumacher won giving him 5 wins from the first 6 races of the season. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Second place

Damon started the race fourth on the grid and secured second place and 6 points. But with Schumacher's win and 10 points along with his second place in Spain, it gave him 56 points to Damon's 23 and there were only 10 races left.
6. 1994 race seven in France saw Damon on the pole position and needing a win to close the points gap. His teammate for the race was fellow Briton Nigel Mansell who secured second spot on the grid. Schumacher won yet again. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Second place

Lady Luck was king, but once more Damon was runner-up to a Schumacher win, only 12 seconds behind at the flag. The 6 points were good, but Schumacher had 10 points. Damon also achieved the fastest lap. Teammate Mansell retired with a gearbox problem on lap 45.
7. With Damon's luck having changed at the 8th race of the 1994 season in Britain, and securing a race win and 10 points after Schumacher's disqualification, Damon went into round nine in Germany looking for another win to close the gap to Schumacher. The win in race nine went to Gerhard Berger. Schumacher retired with an engine problem. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Eight place

Once more Lady Luck left Damon at a time when he needed her. The race started with 11 cars going out on the first lap because they collided with each other. Damon's 8th place finish gave him zero points. With Schumacher's retirement, also giving him no points for that weekend, they headed into race 10 with Damon with 39 points. Schumacher had 66, while Damon needed some great luck to close the gap and win the title.
8. Race 10 in 1994 was held in Hungary. Damon needed Lady Luck to help him out big time with only 6 races left in the season. Schumacher got the pole, the fastest lap, and the race-win earning 10 points. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Second place

The 6 points for a second place for Damon were good but still just not enough. Schumacher's 10 points took him to 76 points with Damon leaving the track with 45 points, trailing Schumacher by 31 points.
9. Round 14 in 1994 was held at the Jerez track in Spain and called the European Grand Prix. Schumacher took the pole position, race win, and fastest lap. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Second place

Lady Luck was back on Damon's side by the 14th race, and she was making up for those earlier disappointments. Due to Schumacher's disqualification in Britain for ignoring a black flag he was given a 2 race ban, he was also disqualified in Belgium for an illegal aerodynamic advantage. Damon capitalized on his main rival being unable to score points, and secured wins in Belgium, Italy, and Portugal. Damon headed to round 15 in Japan with 81 points to Schumacher's 86. Round 15 saw Damon win again with Schumacher in second place.
10. 1994 round 16 in Australia, the last race of the season saw Damon on 91 points with Schumacher a single point ahead of him on 92. Damon had to finish ahead of Schumacher to secure the title. The Australian Grand Prix win went to Damon's teammate for the day, Nigel Mansell. Where did Damon finish?

Answer: Retired

Lady Luck was on someone else's side for this race. Schumacher started on second spot on the grid next to pole sitter Nigel Mansell and with Damon in third place. Schumacher took the lead with Damon right behind him. On lap 36, Damon was catching up to Schumacher who went off the track, hit the wall with his right wheels then pulled back onto the track. Damon had just come round the corner when Schumacher pulled across the track in front of him. On the next corner Damon was close enough to make try and make a pass on Schumacher. Schumacher turned in and collided with Damon. Schumacher was out of the race, but Damon tried to continue hoping to make it to the pit to repair his car.

The front left suspension wishbone was damaged beyond repair and Damon had to retire from the race. With neither driver scoring points, Schumacher won the title in controversial circumstances by just one single point. Damon Hill would have to wait until 1996 to win his one and only Formula One world title, becoming the only son of a former world champion to win the title as well.
