Federer won the 118th championship by defeating Andy Roddick, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(7-3), and 6-4. The entire match took only two hours and 30 minutes. It was Roger's third grand slam, and was won on July 4th.

The Pistons shocked the world by defeating the heavily-favored Los Angeles Lakers, four games to one. The Lakers had a Dream Team of their own in the names of Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, and a host of others. The Pistons brought their hearts to the game, and Richard Hamilton led Detroit by averaging 21.4 points per game. Chauncey Billups of the Pistons was voted the Finals MVP.

West Indies defeated Pakistan, and England upset Australia, to make this head-to-head match. West Indies coach Gus Logie led Rahul Dravid, Ian Bradshaw, and Courtney Browne, to a two-wicket victory over England, in a game played in England. Browne and Bradshaw had a 71 run unbeaten ninth wicket stand.
