Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the 1990 season, this team rolled to a 29-5 regular season record before annihilating the competition in the NCAA Tournament. Led by head coach Jerry Tarkanian and his "amoeba defense", which team walloped Duke 103-73 in the championship game?

Answer: UNLV

The Runnin' Rebels of UNLV destroyed Duke 103-73 in the championship behind future NBA players Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Greg Anthony. The Rebels also beat Georgia Tech in the Final Four semi-finals 90-81, while Arkansas was bested by Duke 97-83 in the other semi-final. Fresno State was a later coaching destination for Tarkanian, who retired from coaching following the 2003 season.
2. The 1991 Final Four saw two familiar tournament foes clash in the semi-finals, but only one advanced to go on and win the NCAA crown by toppling No. 3 Kansas 72-65 in the title game. Who was the 1991 National Champion?

Answer: Duke

The Duke Blue Devils did what everyone else had found impossible in the semi-finals and beat UNLV. The Runnin' Rebels entered the tournament as the defending national champion, which returned all of its starters, sported a 30-0 record, and had thrashed the Blue Devils in the previous year's championship game.

Despite being the underdog, Duke won late on a pair of Christian Laettner free throws and went on to beat Kansas in the title game. The Jayhawks had knocked off North Carolina 79-73 in the other semi-final, while Seton Hall had fallen 77-65 to UNLV in the West Regional Final.
3. The 1992 NCAA Tournament will forever be remembered for two things. First, The Fab Five, and second, what people have called, "The Shot" or "The Greatest Game Ever Played." You shouldn't need any other hints. Who was the 1992 National Champion?

Answer: Duke

Duke became the first team to repeat as National Champions since UCLA in the 1970s, when it beat No. 6 Michigan 71-51 in the championship. The Wolverines will always be remembered for The Fab Five, which saw Michigan run all the way to the title behind five starting freshmen. Duke also beat Indiana 81-78 in the semis, while Cincinnati came up short, 76-72, to Michigan in the other semifinal.

Despite all the Final Four excitement nothing came close to topping the hype surrounding the East Regional Final between Duke and Kentucky at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Rick Pitino's Wildcats took the defending champs to overtime, and had seemingly vaulted itself into the Final Four behind Sean Woods, who banked in a wild floater with just two seconds left.

However, Grant Hill then threw a 3/4 court pass to Christian Laettner out of a Duke timeout, which then saw Laettner take one dribble, pump fake and drain a buzzer-beating jumper for a 104-103 win. Laettner finished the game a perfect 10-for-10 from the field and 10-for-10 from the free throw line.

The win sent Duke to its fifth straight Final Four.
4. The 1993 Championship can be summed up by saying, "The Timeout." What team was crowned champion after this anti-climatic finish to the tournament's final game?

Answer: North Carolina

Chris Webber called a timeout when Michigan had no timeouts remaining, costing the Wolverines a shot to tie the game in the closing seconds, as the Tar Heels were awarded technical foul shots and possession of the ball. North Carolina's 77-71 win gave head coach Dean Smith his third and final National Championship. Rick Pitino's Kentucky Wildcats avenged 1992's near miss of the Final Four, but lost to Michigan 81-78 in overtime in the semi-finals.

The Tar Heels also beat Kansas, which played in its second Final Four in three years, 78-68 in the other Final Four matchup.
5. Which team won the 1994 National Championship by using its "40 Minutes of Hell" defensive system?

Answer: Arkansas

Head Coach Nolan Richardson led his Razorbacks to their second Final Four during the 1990s, which culminated with a 76-72 win over Duke in the championship. The Hogs also beat Arizona 91-82 in the Final Four, while Duke advanced past Florida 70-65 behind All-American Grant Hill.

The Razorbacks were led by All-American and Tournament MVP Corliss Williamson and sweet shooting Scotty Thurman. The "Forty Minutes of Hell" defense designed by Richardson utilized a full-court press for the entire game, whipping opponents into a high-scoring frenzy.
6. The 1995 National Champion certainly was not new to hanging banners in their home gym. Which team won the championship behind an unexpected 26 points from freshman Toby Bailey, and 30 points from All-American Ed O'Bannon?

Answer: UCLA

The Bruins captured the school's 11th National Championship when it defeated defending champ Arkansas 89-78. Ed O'Bannon was named the Tournament MVP, but freshman PG Cameron Dollar was perhaps the most unheralded star for the Bruins. Dollar had to play 39 minutes in the championship game after senior Tyus Edney was unable to play after sustaining a wrist injury in the Bruins 74-61 semi-final win over Oklahoma State. Dollar controlled the tempo of the game while scoring 6 points and dishing out 8 assists. North Carolina was the other final four participant, but dropped a 75-68 contest to the Razorbacks in the semi-finals.
7. Which school won the 1996 National Championship behind the likes of Tony Delk, Antoine Walker, Mark Pope, Derek Anderson, Walter McCarty, and Ron Mercer?

Answer: Kentucky

Kentucky trumped Syracuse 76-67 in the title game to give coach Rick Pitino his first national championship. The Wildcats, which featured 6 future NBA players, also beat top-ranked UMass 81-74 in the semifinals, avenging a season-opening loss to the Minutemen.

The Orangemen advanced to the title game by defeating Mississippi State 77-69 behind All-American John Wallace. The Final Four showcased seven first round 1996 NBA Draft picks: Marcus Camby (#2), Antoine Walker (#6), Erick Dampier (#10), Tony Delk (#16), John Wallace (#18), Walter McCarty (#19), and Dontae' Jones (#21). Also, Mark Pope was the #52 overall pick in the second round.
8. Which school won its first ever national championship in 1997 by becoming the first team in tournament history to defeat three No. 1 seeds en route to a title?

Answer: Arizona

Arizona snuck by Kentucky 84-79 in overtime, scoring all of its points in the extra session via the free throw line, to give Lute Olsen and the Wildcats their first National Championship. Freshman Mike Bibby scored 19 points in the win, while tournament MVP Miles Simon netted 30 for 'Zona. Minnesota was also a Final Four team, losing 78-69 to Kentucky in the semifinals. Providence fell in overtime to Arizona 96-92 in the Elite Eight, while Syracuse was not a tournament participant. North Carolina was the fourth Final Four participant.
9. The 1998 National Champion won its second title of the decade by defeating an unlikely Mountain West Conference opponent. Who was the 1998 champ?

Answer: Kentucky

The Wildcats, which played in its third straight title game, defeated MWC foe Utah 78-69 to win the title and give first-year coach Orlando "Tubby" Smith his first championship. The other Final Four teams from 1998 were North Carolina and Stanford.
10. The final champion of the 1990s was also a first time winner. Who won the 1999 title by defeating Duke 77-74?

Answer: Connecticut

The Huskies, who were led by junior Richard Hamilton and senior Ricky Moore, gave Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun and UConn their first title with the triumph over Duke. Hamilton, the tournament MVP, scored 27 points in the win. The Huskies defeated Ohio State 64-58 in the semifinals, while Duke outlasted Michigan State 68-62 in the other half of the twinbill.
