Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Having won gold in Beijing, Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase were defending champions in their rowing event. Where did they finish at London 2012?

Answer: Second

The pair rowed in the lightweight double sculls event. The final started dramatically when one of the seats in the boat broke. Since it happened early, the rules allowed for the race to be stopped for repairs to be carried out. Despite building up a lead, the pair were overtaken by the Danish rowers, with New Zealand taking bronze.
2. Having won silver medals at the three previous Olympic Games, which female rower at last achieved gold at the London 2012 Games?

Answer: Katherine Grainger

Katherine had finished second in the quadruple sculls in both Sydney (2000) and Beijing (2008). She also won silver in Athens (2004) in the coxless pair. For 2012, she was teamed with Anna Watkins in the double sculls and the duo raced to gold ahead of Australia and Poland. Beth Tweddle was in the gymnastics team, while Tina Cook and Mary King both represented Great Britain in eventing.
3. David Florence and Richard Hounslow won the silver medal for Britain in the canoe slalom event. Which country did the winning pair of Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott represent?

Answer: Great Britain

Despite his name, Etienne is English and paired with Tim Baillie to take the gold medal, with the other British duo taking the silver. As the slowest qualifiers, Baillie and Stott were the first competitors in the final run, and set a time that no-one else could beat.

The bronze medal was taken by Slovakia. The slalom events took place at the Lee Valley White Water Centre, in Hertfordshire. The venue was purpose built for the Olympics and was officially opened in 2010 by Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.
4. Which British sailor achieved his third successive gold medal in the Finn class at the 2012 Olympics?

Answer: Ben Ainslie

Ben started poorly by his standards, and the Danish competitor built up a useful lead over the first six races. Ainslie then pulled back, angered by what he believed to be some gamesmanship from the Dane, who he relegated to the silver medal position. Ben originally competed in the Laser class, where he had already won silver in 1996 and gold in 2000.

He moved up to the bigger Finn class and went on to win gold in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Iain Percy won silver, with Andrew Simpson, in the Star class which they had won in Beijing. Greg Rutherford was Britain's gold medal winner in the long jump, in which Chris Tomlinson finished sixth.
5. The rowing events at the 2012 Olympics were held on a lake belonging to which famous school?

Answer: Eton

All these are well known public (i.e. fee paying) schools in the UK, but it was Eton College which acted as host to the rowing and some of the canoeing events. Dorney Lake was renamed Eton Dorney for the duration of the games, and saw much success for the British team.

The idea of creating a purpose built facility at Eton was first suggested in the 1960s, but building work did not start until 1996, finishing, as planned, in 2006.
6. The first British gold medal of the 2012 Olympics was won by members of the rowing team.

Answer: True

The host country was still waiting for its first gold medal after five days of competition, so it was a relief when Helen Glover and Heather Stanning won their event. They achieved success in the coxless pair event on 1st August, swiftly followed by Bradley Wiggins winning a cycling gold medal on the same day.

As well as providing Britain's first gold, the pair were also the first female rowers from Great Britain to win an Olympic gold medal.
7. The victorious members of Britain's coxless four rowing crew were Alex Gregory, Tom James, Pete Reed and which other man?

Answer: Andrew Triggs-Hogg

Britain's excellent record in the event was maintained by these four men, three of whom had also won gold at the Beijing games in 2008. The only change was Alex Gregory replacing Steve Williams. Australia took silver with USA finishing third. The other men were all gold medallists in London, with Peter Wilson winning his shooting event, Jason Kenny winning cycling gold and Carl Hester being part of the successful dressage team.
8. Having won gold at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992, which rower returned to the sport to win bronze in London at the age of forty?

Answer: Greg Searle

Greg Searle had won in the coxed pairs in tandem with his brother, Jonny, with Gary Herbert coxing them to victory. After disappointing results at later games, Greg retired, but returned as a member of the eight, who took bronze in London behind Germany and Canada.

The others are multiple gold medal winners. Sir Steve Redgrave took gold in Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney and was aged fifty in 2012. Sir Matthew Pinsent won four gold medals, in Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney and Athens, while James Cracknell won in Sydney and Athens. All three had retired well before the London games began, with Redgrave and Pinsent acting as commentators for the BBC at the rowing events.
9. Nick Dempsey won a silver medal in the 2012 Olympics in which event?

Answer: Sailboard (sailing)

The sailing events took place in Weymouth, Dorset, on the south coast of England. The sailboarding took place over ten races, with each competitor's worst finish ignored. The gold medal had already been secured by the Netherlands before the final race, but Nick finished in second place to pick up the silver. Paul Goodison represented us in the Laser class, and the rowers were George Nash and Will Satch, who won bronze. Tim Brabants was the defending champion in the canoe event, but finished last in the final.
10. The final gold medal won on the water for Great Britain was in the canoe sprint. Who was the successful competitor?

Answer: Ed McKeever

Ed took part in the shortest of the kayaking events, a sprint over a 200 metre course. The race took under forty seconds, and McKeever managed to build up a lead and hold on to it. Spain took silver and Canada were third. The names listed were all gold medallists in London, with Joshua winning the Super Heavyweight boxing and Campbell the bantamweight. Alistair Brownlee won the triathlon, with his brother, Jonny, taking bronze.
