Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ottawa's original football team was founded in 1876 and folded in 1996. Standing as one of North America's longest-lasting sports franchises, this team won nine Grey Cups in its history. In 1876, they were originally known simply as the Ottawa Football Club. By what name did they go by for the better part of a century?

Answer: The Rough Riders

The Ottawa CFL team adopted the name Rough Riders after the 1897 season, but they were also known as the Ottawa Senators in 1925 and 1926. Contrary to what many people think, the Ottawa Rough Riders franchise had nothing to do with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, another CFL team founded in Regina in 1910. The two teams, Ottawa and Saskatchewan, met four times in the Grey Cup finals.
2. The Canadian Football League returned to Ottawa in 2002. What was the new team's nickname?

Answer: The Renegades

The Renegades played for four seasons at Frank Clair Stadium, the former home of the Ottawa Rough Riders. The team was suspended in 2006 due to financial difficulties and lack of interest in the city, and the players were absorbed by the other CFL teams. In 2008, the Renegades franchise was re-awarded to owner Jeff Hunt.
3. The original Ottawa professional hockey team went through many 'eras' and nicknames in their history from 1883 to 1934. Which of these is one of the names that the team used, in an era that most people consider to be the team's most winningest?

Answer: The Silver Seven

While the team was always *officially* just the Ottawa Hockey Club, they adopted a few nicknames. In addition to the Silver Seven, they were also known as the Generals and the Capitals. The Silver Seven era (1903-1907) is known as one of the first great 'dynasties' of hockey.

They won the Stanley Cup in 1903, 1904, 1905, and 1906, and were known for their aggressive style of playing, often causing injuries to other teams, leading hockey to become known as "the bloodiest game in Ottawa". The Millionaires used to play in Vancouver, the Granites in Toronto, and the Victorias in Montreal, around the same time in history as the Silver Seven.
4. What is the nickname of the teams who play with the University of Ottawa?

Answer: The Gee-Gees

The name Gee-Gees stands for their logo and mascot, a horse; in horse racing a gee-gee is the term for the first horse out of the gate. The name also refers to the team's colours, grey and garnet. The U of O Gee-Gees are most well-known for their winning football team, but have a strong basketball, volleyball and women's soccer teams as well.

The Mustangs play at the University of Western Ontario, the Golden Bears at the University of Alberta, and the Redmen at McGill University.
5. The little-known team called the Ottawa Loggers were in town for only a couple of years from 1995-1997. What sport did they play?

Answer: Roller hockey

The Roller Hockey International league came to Ottawa when the old team of the New England Stingers relocated. The 1995 season actually went pretty well for the team; they made the playoffs. However they failed to do as well the next year, and they soon shut down the franchise (but not before changing their name to the Ottawa Wheels for a season).
6. Ottawa's former minor league baseball team was named after which big cat?

Answer: Lynx

The Ottawa Lynx were a Triple-A International League team playing in Ottawa from 1993-2007. They started out as the farm team for the MLB's Montreal Expos, then for the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies. Support for the team waned in Ottawa after the first few seasons, and the team was relocate to Allentown, Pennsylvania at the start of the 2008 season where they now play as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

In the 1950s, Ottawa had another International League team, the Ottawa Giants. They became the Ottawa Athletics in 1952 and then relocated to Columbus, Ohio in 1954.

When the Lynx left town, the Canadian-American Baseball League granted a team to Ottawa, nicknamed the Rapidz. They began playing in Spring 2008, and declared bankruptcy in the fall of 2008.
7. Why are the Ottawa 67s called the 67s?

Answer: The team was founded in 1967

The 67s are a hockey team, playing in the Ontario Hockey League. They began as an expansion team in 1967, and the name was chosen to commemorate the year because it was also Canada's centennial year. Legendary coach Brian Kilrea joined the team in 1974.

He left for a couple of years in the 1980s to coach the New York Islanders, but returned to the Ottawa 67s in 1986. He left again for the 1994-95 season, but returned the next year. Kilrea and former player Denis Potvin are the only people affiliated with the 67s to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
8. What sport did the Ottawa Rebel play?

Answer: Lacrosse

The Rebel, of the National Lacrosse League, began as the Syracuse Smash, in Syracuse, New York. Due to poor performance, that team was relocated to Ottawa in 2001. They played until 2003, and then, because of lack of interest in the city, became inactive after that. The team was eventually purchased and moved to Edmonton in 2005.
9. Which university located in Ottawa is home to the Ravens basketball team, National Champions for fives seasons in a row from 2003-2007?

Answer: Carleton University

Not only was the Carleton University men's basketball team the National Champions for five years straight, they also had an 87-game winning streak. The streak went from the 2003 season, until it was broken on January 8, 2006, in a game against the Brock Badgers. Ten days later, their home-game winning streak was broken at 56 games by the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, Carleton's main rival.
10. After a lengthy absence from the NHL, Ottawa finally was awarded with a hockey expansion franchise in 1993. What did they name this new team?

Answer: Senators

Unlike many of the sports teams we've seen in this quiz, the Senators are a wildly popular team in Ottawa and are supported by the faithful Sens Army. For the first few years, the Sens weren't very successful; they finished last in the league in their first four seasons.

They made the playoffs for the first time in 1997, the first season of the 'Jacques Martin' era (the head coach who turned the team into the winning one we know today). The Sens have yet to become Stanley Cup champions, but they did make it to the final round in 2007.
