Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Six schools within Division I-A football do not use the word "University" in their school name.

Answer: False

There are five. Georgia Tech (the Georgia Institute of Technology), Boston College, Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (or as we know it, Army), are the only schools with this distinction.
2. Which schools in the SEC share the name, Tigers?

Answer: LSU and Auburn

Kentucky is the Wildcats, S.C. is the Gamecocks, Georgia Bulldogs, Vanderbilt Commodores, and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
3. Which Philadelphia schools' mascots have been banned from the other's campus?

Answer: Temple and St. Joseph's

The Temple Owl and the St. Joe's Hawk have fought so many times that neither is allowed on the other's campus. Fortunately, St. Joe's doesn't have a football team so we aren't subjected to that fight.
4. Which Big 12 Conference scchool shares a nickname with Washington State?

Answer: Houston

The Houston Cougar was in a tussle with the Oregon Duck. In the wild, we all know who would win, but in this case, the Duck got the drop on the Cougar and beat him down.
5. Florida State and Southern Cal's mascots share what tradition?

Answer: Both ride on horses

The FSU pregame ceremony where the Seminole mascot rides in on the horse and plants a flaming spear at midfield, is among the more awe-inspiring in college sports.
6. Which two schools use natural disasters as nicknames?

Answer: Miami (FL) and Iowa State

Safe to say that the Miami Hurricanes (multiple national championships and a Heisman Trophy winner) have had a bit more success than the Iowa State Cylcones (who once had a player finish in the top 5 in the Heisman voting).
7. Which Big Ten team's nickname and mascot has caused the NCAA to ban the school from hosting NCAA-sanctioned tournaments?

Answer: Illinois

As offensive as some people find Gophers, Hoosiers and Buckeyes, Illinois' Chief Illinwek was found in violation of the NCAA's rule against offensive Native American nicknames. The mascot was retired in 2007.
8. Syracuse University's teams used to be called the Orangemen (or the Orangewomen). In 2004, they changed their name to what?

Answer: Orange

Syracuse is the home of many famous alumni including Donovan McNabb, Derrick Coleman, Marvin Harrison, and Bob Costas.
9. Southern Mississippi's teams use what colorful avian nickname?

Answer: Golden Eagles

After 17 seasons (15 winning ones), USM forced football coach Jeff Bower to resign. Karma usually comes into play on things like that.
10. Wesley College (Dover, DE) shares a nickname with which Big Ten school?

Answer: Michigan

Wesley has reached the Division III football tournament numerous times, reaching the semi-finals in 2005 and 2006, where it lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater. Their mascot is the Wolverine.
11. Which of the following schools is the state university of New Jersey?

Answer: Rutgers

Rutgers reached the International Bowl in 2007 behind running back Ray Rice and QB Mike Teel.
12. Jeff Garcia was a Spartan for which of the following schools?

Answer: San Jose State

Garcia was a bay-area product who stayed at home after gaining little interest from other I-A schools.
13. Ball State University goes by what nickname?

Answer: Cardinals

Their most famous alum is David Letterman.
14. Joe Namath's college team uses what nickname?

Answer: Crimson Tide

One of the Super Bowl's most famous QBs, and the man without whom the NFL as we know it would not exist (had the AFLs Jets been blown out by the NFLs Colts, the leagues would probably not have merged), went to the University of Alabama.
15. Superman would enjoy which school, nicknamed the Golden Flashes?

Answer: Kent State

Kent State's alumni list includes the NFLs Antonio Gates, who never played football at the school.
16. Which of the following schools does not have a plural nickname?

Answer: Stanford

Stanford's football program has seen its share of difficult times in the 2000s, but the overall athletic program has been outstanding. They've won the Sears Trophy, given to the school with the most highly rated teams, on multiple occasions. Their nickname is Cardinal.
17. How many rodents are mascots in the ACC?

Answer: 0

No ACC team uses a rodent as its mascot. There are four "humans" (Duke, Florida State, Virginia, and Wake Forest), a bird (Boston College), a disaster (Miami), an insect (Georgia Tech), a cat (Clemson), a reptile (Maryland), and a wolf pack (NC State).
18. Which Big Ten mascot would fit in perfectly on M*A*S*H*?

Answer: Iowa

All the other possible answers come from movies. Michigan Wolverines (from "Red Dawn"), Michigan State Spartans (from "Meet the Spartans" and "300"), and Northwestern Wildcats (from "Wildcats"). They are the Iowa Hawkeyes.
19. Temple, Rice, and Florida Atlantic share which avian nickname?

Answer: Owls

Florida Atlantic, under former Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger, won their first conference championship and bowl game in 2007. They were a I-AA school until 2004.
20. Which school's athletic teams are known as the Banana Slugs?

Answer: UC-Santa Cruz

When the school began its athletic program, the chancellor dubbed the teams the "Sea Lions". Students and athletes hated the name and voted to use Banana Slugs, although there is still a sea lion statue in front of the school's arena, and a sea lion is painted on the basketball court.
