Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name chosen by the media for the 1992 U.S. Men's Olympic basketball team?

Answer: Dream Team

After a rule change in 1989, the international basketball's governing body allowed professional players from all countries to compete in the Olympics, for the first time. The NBA was approached to supply players but was lukewarm in response. Eventually, twelve players were chosen to represent the U.S. at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. "Sports Illustrated" dubbed them the Dream Team and featured them on their cover.
2. What basketball great, known as "His Airness", refused to be named as captain of the team after refusing to play if Isiah Thomas of the Detroit Pistons were chosen for the team?

Answer: Michael Jordan

Michael Jordan admitted in a 2012 documentary that he wouldn't have played if Isiah Thomas played and declined the team captain's spot. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird became co-captains. Shaquille was not chosen to be on the team, Christian Laettner being chosen from Duke instead.
3. The coach of the Dream Team once stated that travelling with the team was like travelling with rock stars. He was so confident in their abilities that he declined to call even one timeout during the Olympic games. What was the name of the coach of the Dream Team? Think of a time-related word as a hint.

Answer: Chuck Daly

Chuck Daly grew up in St. Marys, Pennsylvania and began his coaching career in Punxsutawney, PA in 1955. He was a winning coach with the Detroit Pistons in 1992 when he was chosen as coach for the Olympic basketball team. He has since died of pancreatic cancer.

He is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Charles Barkley was a member of the Dream Team, but not coach. Fred Couples is a famous golfer and Fearless Freep is a "Looney Tunes" character.
4. What was the reaction to the Dream Team by their Olympic basketball opponents?

Answer: they idolized them

The Olympic games typically allowed the opposing team to pose for pictures with the stars and allowed for autographs to be taken. For the most part, the opposing players knew that they were outclassed but they didn't care, as they were getting a chance to play with their idols.
5. Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen shared a first-ever accomplishment in 1992. What was that? Remember, they both played for the Chicago Bulls.

Answer: winning both the Olympics and the NBA title

As members of the Chicago Bulls and the Dream Team, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were the first players to win both an Olympic and an NBA title in 1992. The Chicago Bulls took on the Portland Trail Blazers in 1992 and were victorious in six games.
6. Did the Dream Team win their first game as a squad after practicing in California to face the NCAA Basketball All-Stars?

Answer: No

The Dream Team first played the NCAA Basketball All-Stars, a group of college players chosen for the level of skills that would be expected from European players at the upcoming Olympics. Chuck Daly played Michael Jordan sparingly and made unsuitable substitutions during this first game to humble his new squad.

In a more normal match, the following day, the Dream Team had an easy victory.
7. During their practice in Monaco, the Dream Team split up into two squads and played all-out in what would be called by Michael Jordan "the best game I was ever in". How did "Sports Illustrated" describe it?

Answer: "the greatest game nobody ever saw"

Johnson, Barkley, Robinson, Mullin and Laettner faced off against Jordan, Malone, Ewing, Pippen and Bird in a practice game with Michael Jordan's team ultimately winning. "Sports Illustrated" called it the "the greatest game nobody ever saw".
8. During Olympic play, opposing teams lost by an average of 43.8 points per game to the Dream Team. What record did the Dream Team become the first to ever accomplish in the Olympics?

Answer: scoring more than one hundred points in every game

The Dream Team scored more than one hundred points in every game for the first time in U.S. Olympic history. There were no strict curfews imposed on the members of the Dream Team, although they stayed at a luxury hotel in Barcelona, rather than Olympic Village. Terrorist concerns and death threats led to a large security presence at the hotel.
9. What was the closest game played by the Dream Team during the Olympics?

Answer: the Gold Medal game against Croatia

The closest game for the Dream Team was the Gold Medal game against Croatia. The score was ultimately 117 to 85 but the score was close at the half with the score 56 to 42 for Team USA. At one point in the first half, Croatia actually held the lead. The Dream Team easily beat both Angola and Lithuania.
10. Did the President of the International Olympic Committee state that the men's basketball tournament at the 1992 Olympic Games had been a resounding success and the most important aspect of those games?

Answer: Yes

Juan Antonio Samaranch, President of the International Olympic Committee, stated that "the most important aspect of the Games has been the resounding success of the basketball tournament, as we've witnessed the best basketball in the world. The Palau d'Esports de Badalona has become the mecca of this sport".

The Dream Team stirred international interest in basketball and would be its greatest legacy.

Quiz-writing can be a difficult venture, more or less, but some of our brave authors opted in to receive a title in May 2012 that tested their focus. In addition to receiving a title with the word 'More' or 'Less' in the name, they were also restricted for category choices; those with a 'More' title had to use one of three categories given with the title and those with a 'Less' title had to use anything but the three categories given.
