Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2002, a rule on fuel cells decreased the amount of fuel the cars had at the restrictor plate tracks (Daytona and Talladega). How much fuel was in one tank of gas under the new rule?

Answer: 13 gallons

Before this rule was implemented, the fuel cell was at 22 gallons.
2. In 2002, a rule was made ordering pit crew members to wear helmets.

Answer: True

Even before this rule was announced, Ricky Craven and his pit crew members wore helmets.
3. Which of these is not a penalty, according to NASCAR rules?

Answer: Cutting off parts of a damaged race car.

If parts of a race car are damaged, the pit crew or the people in the shop can use whatever tools needed to cut pieces off.
4. At Daytona and Talladega in 2002, drivers were penalized for passing below the yellow line.

Answer: True

However, if the driver was forced to go below the yellow line and pass a car, it was alright. The yellow divides the track from the inboard 'apron'. That is not a racing lane.
5. In 2002, what happened if a driver wrecked their car before the race, and had to bring out a backup car?

Answer: They had to start last on race day

If the race car was wrecked in the race though, the drivers couldn't use another car.
6. In 2002, drivers were black-flagged for taking equipment out of pit road.

Answer: True

Drivers couldn't take anything out of pit road, even a bottle of water! This was to cut down on debris, and a safety hazard if the car was involved in a wreck.
7. In 2002, how many championship points were taken away, if parts were illegally modified on the race car?

Answer: 25

Cars were inspected before and after the race, as to make sure nothing had been done to them to make them have an advantage.
8. In 2002, crew members were fined for illegal modifications as well?

Answer: True

They were fined money instead of points, unlike the drivers. The amount of money taken away was determined by what was modified.
9. In 2002, what was the color of the flag, if a driver was disqualified for speeding on pit road, or passing cars before restarts?

Answer: Black.

The drivers were black flagged, and had to come to pit road and stop in their pit box for five seconds.
10. In 2002, pit road could be closed, even under a caution?

Answer: True

This happened if a car stalled in the pits or if the pits were not dry yet, or blocked.
