Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the 1993 NCAA Final Four?

Answer: North Carolina

North Carolina blew a sigh of relief when, with 11 seconds remaining and the score at 73-71, Chris Webber called a timeout. But there were no time outs remaining for Michigan, causing a technical foul and UNC hitting both free throws to take a game-winning 75-71 lead. They won 77-71.
2. Who threw the inbounds pass to Christian Laettner in the East Regional Finals of 1992 to win the game?

Answer: Grant Hill

There was no one pressuring Hill's inbounds pass, so he basically had a clear shot to the center's hands for the most remarkable shot in NCAA basketball history.
3. Who was 18th on the preseason poll coming into the 2006-07 season?

Answer: Texas

When the whole starting lineup of Texas left in 2005, people believed that Texas would have an off year and a unranked spot. However, with the freshman Kevin Durant and his slick-shooting sidekick A.J. Abrams, Texas was back to business in the polls.
4. Who won the 1999 Big East Championship?

Answer: St. Johns

St. Johns had a team carried by Ron Artest and Lavor Postell that went to the Elite Eight before losing to Ohio State. But, the team with the last laugh from the Big East was Connecticut, winning the NCAA National Championship in Tampa against Duke 77-74, which by the way Connecticut was led by a guy known as Richard Hamilton.
5. Who upset the #2 seed Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament of 2001?

Answer: Hampton

Tiny Hampton executed their game plan perfectly over an Iowa State team starring Marcus Fizer and Jamaal Tinsley, slowly running their motions and eating up the shot clock to prevent the Cyclones from running before finally coming out on top.
6. What year did Dean Smith start coaching the University of North Carolina?

Answer: 1961

Dean Smith originally coached North Carolina from 1960-1963 before getting fired. After the 1963-1964 season passed, he was hired for a second time to coach UNC and never looked back. Smith's second go-around went from 1964-1997 before finally retiring.
7. Who led the NCAA in scoring in the 2003-04 season?

Answer: Keydren Clark

The tiny St. Peter's guard from New York attended Rice High School, where he learned different scoring techniques. Later at St. Peter's, he tore up the MAAC and the national spotlight by averaging close to 35 points a game in college. Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh only averaged around 20 points a contest in college the year before.
8. Who won the 1950 NIT, and who won the 1950 NCAA Final Four?

Answer: City College of New York

CCNY(City College of New York), which is unfamiliar to the sports world, was college basketball's peak twice. Back then, the NIT came before the NCAA Tournament and there was no rule of how many tournaments you were allowed to go to, so CCNY just got invited to both and put on a remarkable show of basketball before being crowned. CCNY beat the same team in the tournament finals, beating Bradley twice.
9. Who did Don Haskins coach to the National Title?

Answer: Texas Western

Known as the first team to have a starting lineup of only black players, they came to shock the world in 1966 when they beat Kentucky's all-white squad coached by the great Adolf Rupp to take home the trophy literally and figuratively.
10. In 2002, who was the power forward of the 10th seeded team that beat the 3rd seed in overtime, then lost to the 5th seed, which lost to the East Regional 1st seed?

Answer: Antonio Gates-Kent State

This one actually should have been easy because the only player that was matched up with his proper school was #85 for the San Diego Chargers. Strangely enough, he did play basketball and was very good but was undersized to make big bucks playing power forward in the NBA.
