Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What city was the NFL draft of April 2001 held in?

Answer: New York

It's easy to tell where the draft is by listening to the noise level when the Jets or Giants make a selection.
2. For the 20 years from 1980 to 2000, what team has the infamous distinction of exercising the most number one overall picks?

Answer: Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have kicked off the draft four times in during that span, selecting three QBs (John Elway, Jeff George, Peyton Manning) and DT Steve Emtman. Unfortunately, Elway never played a game for the Colts before being dealt to Denver.
3. What player was selected with the number one overall selection, but didn't sign with the team, instead playing baseball that year?

Answer: Bo Jackson

Bo was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1986, but opted to play baseball rather than wear those awful orange uniforms. He later landed with the Raiders, where he became famous as a two sport star.
4. In what is considered one of the greatest draft blunders of all-time, the Green Bay Packers selected what player in 1989 ahead of Barry Sanders?

Answer: Tony Manderich

The Packers selected the mammoth tackle Manderich who (though he revived his career somewhat with the Colts years later) is considered one of the greatest draft busts in history. Instead Barry Sanders slid to the third selection of the 1989 draft and was eagerly snatched up by the division rival, Detroit Lions.
5. Committment to Excellence? You may not think so looking at this bunch. Which of these NFL underachievers was NOT selected in the first round by the Raiders?

Answer: Aundray Bruce

Bruce was selected by the Falcons. He only later brought his underachieving ways to the Silver and Black.
6. In 1976, the expansion team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers used their first ever franchise selection on what player?

Answer: Lee Roy Selmon

While they didn't do much that was good in their first couple of seasons, the Buccaneers came through here with the selection of Selmon, who would be years later the first Buccaneer voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
7. What NFL team only exercised one first round selection from 1994 to 1999?

Answer: San Diego Chargers

The Browns and Ravens weren't even active franchises for that entire span of years and they still used more first round selections than the Chargers. Their only selection during that period? Ryan Leaf. No wonder this club went 1-15 in 2000.
8. Sometimes the right pick can turn around a losing franchise. In 1969, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected this player in the first round who would go on to be one of the building blocks for their 4 Super Bowls in the 1970s. Who is he?

Answer: Joe Greene

Joe Greene started moving the Steelers in the right direction. The following year they added Terry Bradshaw with their first overall selection.
9. Number one overall picks can really add some value to your franchise. Which of these teams has never had the honor of making the first selection in the NFL draft?

Answer: Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have never picked first. They even had to take a backseat to Tampa Bay when both teams entered the league in 1976.
10. Extra Tough One: When a team drafts a player, with a number one overall pick they are hoping to have a Pro Bowl level talent for years to come. Who was the first number one overall selection to make the Pro Bowl?

Answer: Ki Aldrich

Aldritch was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals way back in 1939. He played in 2 Pro Bowls during his 7 year career.
