Answer: Spud Chandler

Ferdinand "Spud" Chandler won the MVP in 1943 with a 20-4 record and a 1.64 ERA. Whitey Ford had 276 career wins with an ERA of 2.75 and a Cy Young Award in 1961. Ron Guidry had the great 1978 Cy Young year when he went 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA, and striking out 18 California Angels in a game. Mel Stottlemyre was a great pitcher who had three 20-game seasons while playing on some very poor Yankee teams.

Answer: Bill Dickey

Bill Dickey had a .313 lifetime batting average while hitting .362 in 1936 to go along with his 7 World Series Championships, but no MVP. Yogi Berra won the MVP in 1951, 1954, and 1955 to go along with his 10 World Series Championships. Elston Howard won the MVP in 1963.

He also was selected for 12 All-Star games and won two Gold Gloves. Thurman Munson won the MVP in 1976. He was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1970. A great Yankee, Thurman died in an airplane accident on Aug. 2, 1979.

Lou Gehrig was the MVP in 1927 and 1936. Known as "The Iron Horse", he was a great ballplayer with a lifetime batting average of .340. He has 6 World Series championships and 7 All-Star selections. Don Mattingly (Donny Baseball) won the MVP in 1985 and won 9 Gold Gloves and 6 All-Star selections. Jason Giambi won the MVP in 2000, but as an Oakland Athletic. Bill "Moose" Skowron never won the MVP but was a great first baseman for the Yankees from 1954-1962.

He was traded to the Dodgers in 1963 and had a great World Series, beating his former Yanks.

Joe Gordon played with the Yanks from 1938-1946. He then played for the Cleveland Indians. He won the MVP in 1942. He was a nine-time All-Star and played on 5 Championship teams (4 with the Yanks and 1 with the Indians). Gordon was elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame in 2009. Bobby Richardson was an All-Star 8 times and won the World Series MVP in a losing effort in 1960, batting in 12 runs. Willie Randolph was a great fielder who won 2 World Series championships as a player and 4 as a coach for the Yanks. Billy Martin played second base for the Yankees from 1950-1957, and went on to mangage the Yankees 5 times.

Answer: Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez won the MVP in 2005 and 2007. "A-Rod" came to the Yankees as a free agent in 2004. He was converted to third base from shortstop because Derek Jeter was the Yankee shortstop. A-Rod also won the MVP as a shortstop with the Texas Rangers in 2003. Graig Nettles played 3rd for the Yanks from 1973-1983 winning two World Series. Graig was a great player who played for 5 other teams.

He was the MVP of the ALCS in 1981, 6 time All Star and two time Gold Glove winner. Red Rolfe played for the Yankees with the great teams of the late 1930's and early 1940's.

He played on 5 World Series Championships and was a 4 time All Star. Dr. Bobby Brown played from 1946-1952 and 1954 with the Yankees. He went on to become a medical doctor and became American League President in 1984.

Phil "Scooter" Rizzuto won the MVP in 1950. He played on 5 All Star teams and 7 World Series Championships. A true Yankee, he went on to become a broadaster for 40 years with the Yankees. Scooter was a great bunter and great fielder. Tony Kubek played shortstop with the Yanks from 1957-1965.

He was rookie of the Year in 1957, 4 time All Star and 3 time World Champion. Tony also went on to broadcasting, most noticabaly with NBC. Frank Crosetti played from 1932-1948 and then went on to coaching.

He has more World Series appearences as a player and coach than anyone. 23 total World Series with 17 championships (8 as a player and 9 as a coach). Mark Koenig played shortstop for the Yankees in the 1920s and 1930s, going to five World Series.

He did win a MVP but it was in 1990 as an Oakland Athelic. Roy White played for the Yankees from 1965-1979. He was an All Star twice and was on two World Champion Yankee squads. Roy was a steady ball player who played on some real bad Yankee teams early in his career.

Joe DiMaggio (1939, 1941, and 1947) and Mickey Mantle (1956, 1957 and 1962) combined for 6 MVPs for centerfield. Not enough can ever be written about these two great Yankee ball players. Centerfield was well covered in Yankee Stadium from 1936-1968.

Answer: Roger Maris

Roger Maris won back to back MVP's in 1960 and 1961. His 61 HRs and 141 RBIs was a great season. It was to be shadowed by an asterisk put after the 61 homers because he did it in a expansion year of 162 games compared to Babe Ruth's record of 60 homers in a 154 game season.

The asterisk was removed in 1991. Babe Ruth won the MVP only once, in 1923. That year he batted .393 with 41 HRs with 170 walks. In 1927 he hit 60 HR's and batted .356, but no MVP. No MVP's for Pinilla or O'Neill. Lou Pinilla played with the Yanks from 1974-1984.

He was Rookie of the Year in 1969 for the Kansas City Royals. He went on to managing several teams and was Manager of the Year 3 times. Paul O'Neill played for the Yankee from 1993-2001. He was on four World Series Championship as a Yankees and one as a Cincinnati Red in 1990.

Mickey Cochrane was a great catcher for the Philadelphia Athletics from 1925-1933. In 1934, he was the player-manager for the Detroit Tigers. That year he hit .320 with 2 HRs and 76 RBIs. His numbers could not match Gehrig's but his leadership as manager got the Tigers to the World Series, who lost to the the St. Louis Cardinals. Jimmie Foxx played for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1934 and came in 10th in the MVP voting. Hank Greenburg played with Detroit in 1934 and finished 6th in the voting. Charlie Geringer also played for Detroit that year and came in 2nd.
