Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Yankees' starting pitcher in their first game at Yankee Stadium?

Answer: Bob Shawkey

On April 18, 1923, the Yankees took on the Red Sox at the brand new Yankee Stadium. With the help of Babe Ruth, who homered, the Yankees won by a score of 4-1.
2. Which Yankee hurler was the starting pitcher for the American League in baseball's first All-Star Game?

Answer: Lefty Gomez

The first All-Star game was held at Chicago's Comiskey Park, on July 6, 1933. Vernon "Lefty" Gomez started for the American League squad, which won the game by a score of 4-2. Lefty Gomez was the Yankees' designated cut-up and practical joker. He was the one player who could even pull pranks on Joe DiMaggio and live to tell about it.
3. Who was the first Yankee pitcher to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award?

Answer: Spud Chandler

Chandler earned the MVP award in 1943. His superb E.R.A. of 1.64 is tainted in some eyes, however, because so many of baseball's best players were overseas in the armed forces at the time.
4. Who was the first New York Yankee pitcher to win the prestigious Cy Young Award?

Answer: Bob Turley

Turley had a 21-7 record for the 1958 Yankees, and was the Most Valuable Player of the 1958 World Series, in which he helped the Yankees avenge their loss to the Milwaukee Braves in the previous Fall Classic.

Turley came to the Yankees from the Baltimore Orioles in a multiplayer deal that also gave the Yankees Don Larsen.
5. What left-handed Yankees reliever of the 1960's was famous for throwing the "Folly Floater"?

Answer: Steve Hamilton

Steve Hamilton pitched for the Yankees from 1963-1970. His Folly Floater, like Rip Sewell's "eephus" pitch, was a slow, high lob that batters were sure they could hit a mile, but which they often missed entirely.
6. Ron Guidry only lost three games in his stellar 1978 season, and interestingly, the pitchers who beat him were all named Mike. Which of these pitchers did not hand Guidry a loss that year?

Answer: Mike Torrez of the Red Sox

"Gator" won a "Triple Crown" of sorts in 1978, leading the American League in wins, strikeouts and ERA.
7. Before moving to the bullpen permanently, which of these ace Yankee relief pitchers threw a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox in a Fourth of July game?

Answer: Dave Righetti

The move to the bullpen worked out well for Righetti, who had a very successful career as a closer. He recorded 46 saves for the Yankees in 1986.
8. In 1973, which two Yankees pitchers shocked America by trading wives?

Answer: Fritz Peterson & Mike Kekich

Peterson got the better of the deal as he and Susanne Kekich got married and lived happily ever after. Mike Kekich and Marilyn Peterson split up shortly after the swap, and never married.
9. Who pitched 33 consecutive scoreless innings for the Yankees in World Series play?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single season home run mark in the regular season of 1961, and Whitey Ford broke the Babe's record for consecutive scoreless innings in World Series play that same year.
10. Everyone knows that Babe Ruth was a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox before he was traded to the Yankees, who made him an outfielder. Did the Babe ever pitch for the Yankees?

Answer: Yes

Between 1920 and 1933, Babe Ruth amassed a record of 5 wins and 0 losses as a pitcher for the Yankees.
