Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Crosley Field
Answer: Cincinnati Reds
Known as Redland Field until 1937, Crosley Field was the home of the Cincinnati Reds between 1912 and 1970. On May 24th, 1935, it was the site of the very first night game in MLB history, when the Philadelphia Phillies were the visitors. The Reds moved to Riverfront Stadium in June, 1970, and then to Great American Ballpark in 2003.
2. Exhibition Stadium
Answer: Toronto Blue Jays
Exhibition Stadium, which had staged CFL football since 1959, became the first home of the expansion Toronto Blue Jays in 1977. The team's opening game, against the Chicago White Sox, was played on a snow-covered field. The Blue Jays moved to the Skydome (later renamed Rogers Centre) in 1989.
3. County Stadium
Answer: Milwaukee Brewers
County Stadium opened in 1953 as the home of the Milwaukee Braves. After the Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966, it was used as the occasional home of the NFL's Green Bay Packers before the Milwaukee Brewers commenced MLB play there in 1970. The Brewers relocated across the parking lot to Miller Park in 2001.
4. Shibe Park
Answer: Philadelphia Phillies
Shibe Park opened in 1909 as the home of the Philadelphia Athletics. The Phillies joined their crosstown rivals there in 1938. The ballpark was renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953, after the Athletics' owner. The Phillies became the sole tenants of the stadium in 1955 when the Athletics moved to Kansas City.
They relocated to Veterans Stadium in 1971, and then to Citizens Park in 2003.
5. Comiskey Park
Answer: Chicago White Sox
The White Sox moved into Comiskey Park in 1910, and shared it with the NFL's Chicago Cardinals between 1922 and 1958. It was the site of four games in the infamous "Black Sox" 1919 World Series. The Sox moved into a new stadium, built next door to the old one, in 1991.
The new ballpark was also known as Comiskey Park in its early years, before taking on the corporate name of US Cellular Field, and then, in 2017, Guaranteed Rate Field.
6. Forbes Field
Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates moved into Forbes Field in 1909, and shared it with the Steelers of the NFL between 1933 and 1963. The Pirates won three World Series crowns whilst based at this ballpark. They moved to Three Rivers Stadium in 1970, and then to PNC Park in 2001.
7. Sick's Stadium
Answer: Seattle Pilots
Sick's Stadium was originally the home of the Seattle Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League. The expansion Seattle Pilots began play there in 1969, but, sadly, only lasted one season in the Pacific Northwest before relocating to Milwaukee and becoming the Brewers.
8. Griffith Stadium
Answer: Washington Senators
The Senators moved in to what was then called American League Park in 1911. It was renamed after the team's owner in 1923, and remained the team's home until they relocated to Minneapolis following the 1960 season. An expansion team, with an identical name, began play there the following season.
However, the new team only played there for a single season before moving to RFK Stadium - they then relocated to Texas in 1972.
9. Memorial Stadium
Answer: Baltimore Orioles
Memorial Stadium was opened in 1921, but completely rebuilt in the early 1950s. Originally used for college football and minor league baseball, it became home to Major League Baseball in 1954 when the St Louis Browns relocated to Baltimore and renamed themselves the Orioles. They would play there until 1991, when they moved into Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
10. Candlestick Park
Answer: San Francisco Giants
The Giants were based in New York before relocating to San Francisco in 1958. After a couple of seasons based at the minor league Seals Stadium, they moved into Candlestick Park in 1960. The NFL's 49ers became co-tenants in 1971, but the stadium was notorious for strong winds and fog. The Giants moved into brand new Pacific Bell Park (later known as AT&T & Park) in 2000.
