1. Which of the following did not have 3000 hits in their career?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Mays reached this plateau in his 19th season with the Giants in 1970. He retired as a Met in 1973 with 3283 career hits. Waner retired with 3152, and Palmeiro had 3020. Hornsby fell short with 2930.
2. Who was the first rookie pitcher to win the Cy Young award?

Answer: Fernando Valenzuela

The others were never eligible for the Cy Young award as it did not begin until 1956. Named after the great pitcher Cy Young, the first recepient was Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Valenzuela also of the Dodgers won the award in 1981. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 1981 also.
3. Which team was the first in Major League history to have their players names on the back of their jerseys?

Answer: White Sox

The 1960 White Sox, via owner Bill Veeck had the names put on their jerseys due to fan complaints of not knowing who the players were. Veeck was also responsible for the exploding scoreboard and Eddie Gaedel fiasco.
4. Which Major League player set a record for committing 81 errors in one season?

Answer: Neal Ball

Ball was a New York Yankee in 1908. He played all but one game at shortstop and committed 80 errors. His other error in the season came from playing second base. Ironically, Neal became the first player in history to pull off an unassisted triple-play in 1907. In seven seasons from 1907-1913, Ball committed 216 errors.
5. Four balls constitute a walk in Major League baseball, but it was not always four. At one point in baseball it took nine balls for a batter to walk. In which year was it changed to four balls to constitute a walk?

Answer: 1889

The 1879 season played it with nine balls, then rule changes made it eight in 1880. In 1882 it was changed to seven. This helped Charley Radbourn win 59 games in 1884. In 1889, more rule changes made it four balls for a batter to walk.
6. Which player was the first in history to hit a home run in eight consecutive games?

Answer: Dale Long

All except Reiser accomplished this. Mattingly did it in 1987, and Junior did it in 1993. Long hit his string with the Pirates in 1956. Long retired with only 132 home runs after 10 seasons.

Answer: Oakland Athletics

After moving from Philadelphia, then from Kansas City, the Athletics became the Oakland Athletics in 1968. Even with their tremendous rosters of the early 1970s and their three consecutive World Series from 1972-1974, Oakland never had a player win a batting title. Tampa Bay's franchise began in only 1998.

Answer: 1975

1975 saw the Red Sox up against the Reds. Rick Wise led Boston with 19 wins. The Reds were led by Gary Nolan, Jack Billingham, and Don Gullett who all won 15. The Reds won the World Series.
9. Which of the following sluggers hit over .400 in a season, but failed to win that season batting title?

Answer: Joe Jackson

Ty Cobb was the only other player to take a backseat after hitting .400. He was runner-up to George Sisler in 1922. Jackson hit .408 with the Indians in 1911, but was runner-up to Cobb's .420.
10. Which pitcher set a record for being an opening-day pitcher in 16 seasons?

Answer: Tom Seaver

In 16 of Tom's 20 seasons, he inaugurated the season for his team. Seaver played with the Mets, White Sox, Reds, and retired with Boston in his final season in 1986. His career record was 311-205. An easy inductee, the hall took Tom in 1992.
