After one year as an assistant coach, Ole Miss promoted Johnny Vaught to fill the head football coach in 1947. Vaught coached the team from 1947 through 1970 and again in 1973. Johnny Vaught led the Ole Miss Rebels to eighteen bowl games and six conference championships. Johnny Vaught was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979.

In the fourth quarter, Ole Miss punter Jake Gibbs punted to Louisiana State University's star Billy Cannon. Billy Cannon returned the punt eighty-nine yards to score the winning touchdown. Billy Cannon won the Heisman Trophy that season. That game was Ole Miss's only defeat of the season. Ole Miss would crush Louisiana State University in the Sugar Bowl at the end of the season by a score of twenty-one to nothing.

The Grove on the campus of the University of Mississippi is a ten acre field. During home football games, the Grove is a very popular tailgating site. Beginning in 1983, the football team would walk on a cemented path through the Grove to the football stadium.

On October 28, 1989, Ole Miss player Chucky Mullins suffered a broken neck while making a head-first tackle on Vanderbilt's fullback Brad Gaines fullback. Mullins became a quadriplegic and would never play football again. Mullins died on May 6, 1991. Beginning in 1990, Ole Miss has awarded the "Chucky Mullins Memorial Courage Award" to a rising senior defender. The award winner wore Mullins' jersey number which was thirty-eight.

Patrick Willis played linebacker from 2003 through 2006 at Ole Miss. In 2005 and 2006, he was first team All-Conference and an All-American. Willis was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year in 2006.

Both the Dick Butkus Award and the Jack Lambert Trophy are given yearly to the top collegiate linebacker. The Conerly Trophy is given to the best college football player in the state of Mississippi. Patrick Willis won all three of these awards in 2006.

Ole Miss offensive tackle Michael Oher was named Freshman All-Conference and Freshman All-American in 2005. Oher was named All-Conference during the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons. Oher was named All-American during the 2008 season. Oher's college recruitment was the subject of the 2006 book "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game" by Michael Lewis.

The novel was the subject of the 2009 film "The Blind Side" starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Kathy Bates, Lily Collins and Jae Head.

The Ole Miss football team defeated the Oklahoma State University football team in the Sugar Bowl on January 1, 2016 to finish their 2015 football season. Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly was named the game's most valuable player. The Ole Miss football team finished the 2015 season with ten wins and three losses.

This was the ninth appearance in the Sugar Bowl by an Ole Miss football team, after an absence of 46 years (the previous eight appearances were across 17 years: 1953, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1970).
