Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The top scorer during the 2007-08 Premiership season was Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 31 goals playing for Manchester United. From which team did he join United?

Answer: Sporting Lisbon

Cristiano Ronaldo started his career at Sporting Lisbon before moving to Manchester United in 2003 at the age of 18. He won three Premiership titles with United as well as the UEFA Champions League in 2008. After helping United to the Champions League final in 2009, where they would lose to Barcelona, Ronaldo moved to Real Madrid for what was then a world record transfer fee.

His spell at Madrid would see him pick up another four Champions League winners medals. He also helped Portugal to win the UEFA European Championship in 2016. Regarded by many as the greatest players of his generation, a claim backed up by FIFA in 2017 when he became only the second player in history, after his contemporary Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Argentina, to be crowned World Player of the Year for a fifth time.

His previous wins had come in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016.
2. Fernando Torres of Liverpool was the second top scorer (jointly with Emmanuel Adebayo) in the 2007-08 Premiership season with 24 goals. After a successful spell with Liverpool he left to join Chelsea in 2011 where goals were harder to come by. In 110 league appearances for Chelsea, how many goals did he score?

Answer: 20

Torres started his career at Atletico Madrid before moving to Liverpool in 2007. A prolific goal scorer, a goal against Aston Villa in December 2009 saw him at the time become the fastest Liverpool player to score 50 league goals. After declaring that he had no intentions of leaving Liverpool, in 2011 he would sign for Chelsea in a move which angered many Liverpool supporters.

Despite the high profile transfer, Torres was unable to capture the same goal scoring form he had displayed at Atletico and Liverpool and managed only 20 league goals in 110 appearances over four seasons for Chelsea.

He did, however, score a memorable goal against Barcelona in the 2012 UEFA Champions League semi-final which helped send Chelsea through to the final. Chelsea would go on to win the tournament for the first time in their history.
3. Second top goal scorer (jointly with Fernando Torres) in the 2007-08 Premiership season was Emmanuel Adebayor of Arsenal. Which national team did he represent?

Answer: Togo

Emmanuel Adebayor joined Arsenal from Monaco in 2006. He scored 46 goals in 104 league appearances before moving to Manchester City in 2009. A loan spell at Real Madrid would follow before he joined Arsenal's North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in 2011.

Although he was eligible to play international football for Nigeria, Adebayor chose to represent his birth nation, Togo, and helped them to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in 2006. This was the first time in their history that they had qualified for the World Cup. Sadly, they were eliminatd in the group stage after losing all three of their matches to South Korea, Switzerland and France respectively.
4. Roque Santa Cruz scored 19 goals in the 2007-08 Premiership season. A Paraguay international, he played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments. Which one did he not feature in?

Answer: 1998

Roque Santa Cruz spent two seasons at Blackburn Rovers after a reasonably successful spell at Bayern Munich.

He made his debut for Paraguay in 1999 and would go on to play 112 times for his country over the next seventeen years. Although he did not score any goals, he was a part of the Paraguay squad which reached the World Cup quarter finals in 2010, losing 1-0 to eventual winners Spain.
5. Benjamin Mwaruwari, otherwise known as Benjani, scored 15 goals in the 2007-08 Premiership. The only player in the top ten list for the season to have scored for more than one club, Benjani represented Portsmouth and which other team?

Answer: Manchester City

Benjani joined Portsmouth from French side Auxerre in 2006. His goalscoring form soon attracted other clubs and in January 2008 he moved to Manchester City. He never really found the same form at City, in part due to a lengthy lay-off because of a thigh injury.

He was loaned to Sunderland in 2010 before moving to Blackburn Rovers. He almost signed for Hull City in 2009 but the move fell through.
6. Dimitar Bertbatov scored 15 goals for Tottenham Hotspur during the 2007-08 season. From which Germany club, runners-up in the 2002 UEFA Champions League Final, did Tottenham sign Berbatov?

Answer: Bayer Leverkusen

Berbatov featured in the team which lost he 2002 Champions League final to Real Madrid at Hampden Stadium in Glasgow, a final mostly remembered for the winning goal - a stunning volley by Zinedin Zidane.

In 2006, Berbatov moved to Tottenham for what was then a record fee for a Bulgarian player. His exploits at Spurs caught the eye of Alex Ferguson and in 2008 he signed for Manchester United in a deal which eclipsed his previous transfer fee. He helped United to the final of the Champions League in 2009 and 2011, where they lost both times to Barcelona. Berbatov did manage to pick up two Premiership winners medals, though, again in 2009 and 2011, becoming the first Bulgarian to feature in an English title-winning team.
7. Robbie Keane scored 15 goals for Tottenham Hotspur during the 2007-08 Premiership campaign. For which team did Keane sign the following season, a move which lasted a mere six months before he rejoined Tottenham?

Answer: Liverpool

Having originally joined Tottenham in 2002, Keane moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2008, a team he had supported since he was a boy. After netting only 5 league goals in 19 games, he was transferred back to Tottenham in January 2009. A loan spell at Celtic followed in 2009-10 before Keane eventually left Tottenham in 2011 to join MLS side LA Galaxy.
8. Much travelled Nigerian striker Yakubu scored 15 goals for Everton during the 2007-08 Premiership season. For which of the following Premiership teams has Yakubu NOT also appeared?

Answer: Newcastle United

Yakubu started his career with Nigerian side Julius Berger. After a loan spell at Portuguese side Gil Vicente, Yakubu spent five years Maccabi Haifa of Israel before moving to England, where he played for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers.

He then moved to China to play for Guangzhou R&F. One year on he left for Qatari side Al-Rayyan before heading back to England in February 2015 to play for Reading. In the summer of 2015 he moved on to Turkish side Kayserispor before moving back to England to play for Coventry City, where he ended his career in 2017.

In a 20 year career, Yakubu played for 15 different clubs.
9. Argentina international Carlos Tevez scored 14 goals for Manchester United during the 2007-08 Premiership season. Which unlikely team brought Tevez to England the previous season?

Answer: West Ham United

In the summer of 2006, West Ham pulled off a massive coup by signing both Tevez and fellow Argentina international Javier Mascherano, both of whom were very highly rated. There was much controversy over the players, however, due to third party ownership of the players.

This would later come back to haunt West Ham when Tevez scored the winning goal against Manchester United on the last day of the season to keep the Hammers in the Premiership and relegate Sheffield United instead. Due to the third party ownership it was found that Tevez was not eligible to play.

Sheffield sued, but the claim was rejected by the Premier League. Sheffield took their claim to an FA arbitration panel who found in their favour and ordered compensation be paid. The two clubs settled out of court for an undisclosed fee. Tevez moved to Manchester United, where he spent two seasons, before moving to rivals Manchester City.
10. Norway striker John Carew was the tenth highest scorer in the 2007-08 Premiership campaign. For which team did he score his 13 goals?

Answer: Aston Villa

Carew played for Aston Villa between 2007 and 2011, having previously played for Rosenborg, Valencia, Roma, Besiktas and Lyon. Carew is the older brother of R&B singer-songwriter Elisabeth Carew.
