Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What connects the great Sir Stanley Matthews with Glasgow Rangers?

Answer: He played for them

Many links connected 'The Wizard of the Dribble' with the club, not least that he did play a few games as a guest during World War II. Stanley married the granddaughter of Tom Vallance, one of the five founding members of Glasgow Rangers. Willie Henderson and Jim Baxter were both invited to take part in his 1965 star studded testimonial game. Stan's last appearance in Scotland was actually against Hearts for Stoke at Tynecastle back in the early '60s.
2. John Greig won a European Cup Winners Cup tie against Real Saragossa on the toss of a coin. What country's currency was used?

Answer: French frank

In season 1966/67, Rangers defeated Real Saragossa 2-0, at Ibrox but lost the return match in Spain by the same margin. After 30 minutes of extra time, the teams were still level so the game was decided on the toss of a coin. John Greig has stated that he still has the coin amongst his football memorabilia.
3. Why is Dave Young so significant in Rangers history?

Answer: He is the pilot of the famous helicopter that flew the League Championship trophy to Easter Road in 2005

Dave has had the glory job of flying the trophy to wherever it is being won on the last day of the season. He was ecstatically welcomed at Tannadice in 2009 and Easter Road in 2005 when Rangers clinched two of their League Championships.
4. Which former Rangers player has Everton as a middle name?

Answer: Mark Walters

A bit unfortunate as he was transferred to Everton's great rivals Liverpool when he left Rangers in 1991.
5. Rangers fan Tom Sutherland hit the international news in 1985 for what reason?

Answer: He was held hostage in Beirut

Tom Sutherland spent over six years as a hostage in Beirut and was released at the same time as Terry Waite. He was a very accomplished footballer as a youngster, and was linked with Rangers but decided to follow an academic path. On his release, he made an emotional visit to Ibrox as a guest of honour and was introduced on the pitch to the fans.
6. What footballing claim to fame does former Rangers director James Barry hold?

Answer: He devised the format for the 'Scottish League Cup'

James Barry forwarded the idea in 1939, but because of the second world war it did not come into fruition until 1946. Of course, Rangers won the first trophy. Rangers former general secretary and director Campbell Ogilvie helped draft the blueprint for the Champions' League.

Incredibly Rangers did wear blue and white hoops for a short period in their early days, however they were thought to be unlucky so they were replaced with plain blue jerseys. The Rangers song 'Follow Follow' started out as a Christian song with similar words in the chorus, "Follow Follow, we will follow Jesus', changed to 'Follow Follow we will follow Rangers'.
7. Which one-time Rangers player once was brave enough to give Stuart Pearce a 'Glasgow Kiss' (head butted him) whilst playing for his country?

Answer: Basile Boli

It occurred during the 1992 European Championship held in Sweden in a game between England and France which ended in a 0-0 draw. As the England player's autobiography was titled, 'Psycho', it could have proved to be quite a foolhardy thing to have done.

Answer: He helped to apprehend terrorists who had bombed Glasgow Airport

A baggage handler working at Glasgow Airport in the summer of 2007, John confronted terrorists who had driven a burning jeep into the congested departure lounge.
9. What team did Glasgow Central MP Mohammad Sarwar claim to support in 2008?

Answer: Both Rangers and Celtic

A typical politician stance, Mohammad Sarwar said: 'I support both Celtic and Rangers, so I am delighted to see Rangers in the UEFA final.'
10. Which famous Ranger was shot and badly wounded during the Korean War?

Answer: Harold Davis

In 1951 whilst playing for East Fife, Harold was called up to do his national service and was sent to fight in the Korean War. Unfortunately, he was badly wounded and took two years to make a full recovery. In 1956, he was signed by Rangers and played alongside such greats as Jim Baxter, Willie Henderson, and Eric Caldow.
11. When Dutch superstar "Ruud Gullit" was asked by football magazine '4 4 2' to pick his Perfect XI, which Rangers player did he include?

Answer: Davie Cooper

His dream team was, Peter Schmeichel, Manfred Kaltz, Franco Baresi, Marcel Desailly, Paolo Maldini, Kaka, Frank Rijkaard, Diego Maradona, Davie Cooper, Johan Cruyff, and Marco van Basten. Gullit stated in the magazine article; 'I played against him in the European Cup when he was with Glasgow Rangers and he was a really skilful player. Unbelievably skillful.

He didn't have much pace but he was a good dribbler who set up plenty of chances for teammates as well as scoring some great goals himself.'
12. Did Davie Cooper ever score against Rangers?

Answer: Yes for both Motherwell and Clydebank

Davie scored for Clydebank prior to signing for Rangers in a Scottish League Cup tie that went to two replays. After leaving the Gers, Davie scored an equalliser for Motherwell against Rangers in a Premier League match at Fir Park, which ended 2-1 to the boys in blue.
13. Which Rangers player was known as "The Wee Prime Minister" during his Ibrox career?

Answer: Ian McMillan

Ian was named after the Conservative Prime Minister of the late '50s and early '60s, Harold McMillan. Whilst playing for Rangers, Ian McMillan remained as a part time player and would work as a quantity surveyor from nine to five, and train at nights.
14. Which Rangers player scored against England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland for Scotland within one calendar year?

Answer: Colin Stein

Colin Stein achieved this during the year of 1969. He scored in all three Home Internationals against Wales in a 5-3 victory at Wrexham, in a 1-1 draw with Northern Ireland at Hampden and against England in a 4-1 defeat played at Wembley. Colin completed the quadruple when he scored against the Republic of Ireland in a friendly match held in Dublin which ended in a 1-1 draw.

It is worthwhile noting the quality of the goalkeepers he scored against, Garry Sprake of Wales, Pat Jennings of Northern Ireland, and the great English custodian Gordon Banks.
15. During the 20th Century, who was the only non-Scottish player to score a hat-trick in an Old Firm match?

Answer: Johnny Hubbard

South African Hubbard became the first non-Scot to score three in an Old Firm game on New Year's Day back in 1955. He scored three times in Rangers 4-1 Ibrox victory over the old enemy.
