Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Everton player was brought on as an early substitute for Muhamed Besic against Chelsea in September 2015, and ended up scoring a hat-trick?

Answer: Steven Naismith

Naismith scored what was described as a 'perfect' hat-trick: one goal with his right foot, one with his left and one with a header. Muhamed Besic was injured in the ninth minute, and within eight minutes of coming on for Everton, Naismith scored. He went on to score again in the 22nd minute and again in the 82nd, with Chelsea's sole goal coming from Nemanja Matic.

It was not a good season for Chelsea - who finished tenth - or Jose Mourinho, who left by nutual consent three months later and was replaced with another former Chelsea manager, Guus Hiddink, who acted as a caretaker.
2. Roger Milla retired from football in 1988, but returned to the game two years later to play for Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup. Against which South American team did he score two goals after coming on as a substitute in the 54th minute?

Answer: Colombia

Goalkeepers in their late thirties are fairly common, but strikers are not. Roger Milla was an exception when he played for Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup, aged 38. Against Colombia in the knockout stage, Milla scored two goals in extra time after coming on as a sub for Louis-Paul Mfédé, which brought Cameroon into the quarter finals, making them the first African team in World Cup history to get this far. Milla also came on as a sub for Emmanuel Maboang against England, setting up Eugčne Ekéké's goal which took Cameroon into the lead, though England ended up winning thanks to Gary Lineker's two late penalties. Milla later went on to play in the 1994 World Cup at the ripe old age of 42, and became the tournament's oldest goalscorer yet after scoring against Russia.
3. Although Lucas Moura scored the hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the 2019 Champions League semi-final, Fernando Llorente - who came on as a substitute for Victor Wanyama - was also credited with turning the game around for Tottenham. Who were their opponents?

Answer: Ajax

Fernando Llorente might not have scored any of the goals that rescued Tottenham in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, but he proved to be instrumental in their win. He had 17 aerial duels in the match, winning the ball in 13 of them, and acted as a hold-up player, constantly tailing both Daley Blind and Matthijs de Ligt, and allowing his team mates to move further up the field. Jose Mourinho - who, funnily enough, would go on to replace Mauricio Pochettino as Tottenham's manager the following season - praised Llorente for his performance, saying that 'his chest was the link for everything'.

This wasn't Llorente's first moment in the tournament as a super sub either; he also scored Tottenham's third goal against Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16, just two minutes after coming on for Lucas Moura.
4. At the 2006 World Cup, which Australian player came on as a substitute against Japan in the 53rd minute and scored two goals?

Answer: Tim Cahill

Australia were trailing 1-0 when Tim Cahill was brought on as a substitute for Mark Bresciano. Half an hour later, Cahill turned the game around for Australia, scoring oals in the 84th and 89th minutes, with John Aloisi adding a third in injury time. Australia came second in the group and advanced into the round of 16, only to be knocked out by Italy (who would go on to win the tournament, in the notorious final where Zinedine Zidane headbutted Marco Materazzi). Cahill also scored the winning goal after coming on as a substitute in a friendly against Costa Rica in 2013.
5. Edin Dzeko gained a reputation as a super sub during his time at Manchester City, such as when he scored two goals against West Bromwich Albion in 2012. Which country does he come from?

Answer: Bosnia and Herzegovina

Although Edin Dzeko has stated that he dislikes the label of 'super sub', he earned it during his time at Manchester City. During the crucial match against Queen's Park Rangers which saw City snatch the title from Manchester United at the last minute, Dzeko handed City a lifeline when he came on for Gareth Barry in the 69th minute and scored City's equaliser in the 92nd minute, before Sergio Agüero's notorious finisher two minutes later. Against West Bromwich Albion the following season, when City were trailing 1-0 and James Milner had been sent off, he came on for Gareth Barry in the 79th minute and scored two goals for City in the 80th and 92nd minutes. One match earlier, Dzeko also scored the winning goal against Fulham in the 87th minute, just a minute after coming on for Javi García.
6. In the 2018-19 season, Liverpool and Manchester City were neck-and-neck in the title race for a long time. Which Liverpool player came on as a substitute to score the winning goal away to Newcastle United in May 2019? (Jordan Pickford might know.)

Answer: Divock Origi

Though Liverpool did not win the title until the following season, they came very close to it in 2019, with Manchester City beating them to it by only one point. At the match in question, late in the season, Newcastle were drawing 2-2 with Liverpool, thanks to goals scored by Salomon Rondon and Christian Atsu. Origi made sure of Liverpool's victory when he came on for an injured Mohamed Salah and scored in the 86th minute. (The Jordan Pickford mention is a reference to the Merseyside Derby at Anfield that season, when Origi - who had come on for Roberto Firmino - scored in the final minute, thanks to a fatal goalkeeping error by Pickford.)
7. Ajax won the Champions League in 1995. Which legendary Dutch player came on as a substitute and broke the deadlock with the only goal on the match?

Answer: Patrick Kluivert

Fabio Capello's AC Milan reached their third Champions League final in a row, only for Louis van Gaal's Ajax side to win instead. Patrick Kluivert, one of Ajax's 'golden generation' of young '90s players and a product of their academy, came on for Jari Litmanen in the 70th minute, and scored the winning goal in the 86th minute (Frank Rijkaard assisted him).

At eighteen, he was the then youngest player to score in a Champions League final. Kluivert would sign for AC Milan two seasons later.
8. The 2000 European Championship final between France and Italy went into extra time after Sylvain Wiltord's equaliser in the 93rd minute. Which player, who replaced Youri Djorkaeff in the 76th minute, scored the golden goal for France?

Answer: David Trezeguet

Italy took the lead in the second half, thanks to a goal from Marco Delvecchio, but Sylvain Wiltord's late equaliser caused the game to go into half an hour of extra time. Thankfully, the French were spared the possibility of a penalty shoot-out when David Trezeguet scored the golden goal in the 103rd minute. Due to rules in force at the time, rather than being continued for a full half-hour, the match ended immediately and France won their second European Championship trophy. Trezeguet was also brought on as a sub for Franck Ribéry when France faced Italy again in the 2006 World Cup final, but was not so lucky this time, as he hit the crossbar in the penalty shoot-out.

Italy won 5-3 on penalties.
9. Oliver Bierhoff was brought on as a substitute by Germany in the 1996 European Championship final and won the match for them, when he scored both of their goals. Who were their opponents?

Answer: Czech Republic

England fans will remember Euro '96 for that terrible moment when Gareth Southgate - who would become the national side's manager many years later - missed his penalty against Germany, who went on to win the tournament one game later. Although the Czech Republic were initially in the lead thanks to a Patrik Berger penalty, Bierhoff turned the game around for Germany after coming on as a substitute for Mehmet Scholl in the 69th minute.

He equalised in the 73rd minute, before ensuring Germany's victory with a 95th minute goal in added extra time - the first golden goal ever in a European Championship final.
10. Which super sub, who returned to manage his team many years later, scored in the 93rd minute to win the 1999 Champions League final for Manchester United?

Answer: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, nicknamed the 'baby-faced assassin', was part of one of Manchester United's greatest seasons of all time, in which they won the Treble of the FA Cup, the Premier League title and the Champions League. Opponents Bayern Munich were leading for most of the match after a sixth-minute goal from Mario Basler, but when Alex Ferguson brought Teddy Sheringham on for Jesper Blomqvist in the 67th minute, and Solskjaer on for Andy Cole in the 81st minute, both substitutes turned the game around during stoppage time.

While Sheringham equalised United in the 91st minute, but it was Solskjaer who won the match for them two minutes later. Solskjaer had form for scoring goals as a sub; one notable example was when he contributed half of United's eight goals against Nottingham Forest in 1999, after coming on for Dwight Yorke in the 72nd minute. Solskjaer returned to manage United in 2018, replacing Jose Mourinho.
