Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these team names was never used by the Cincinnati franchise?

Answer: Red Caps

The franchise began as the Red Stockings, then changed it to Reds. In 1954, the name was changed to Redlegs, due to the name 'Reds' having other connotations by some. The franchise went back to the Reds name in 1960.
There was a Red Cap team in the early days of the National League, owned by Boston in 1876.
2. The Reds would have to wait until 1938 to see a Cincinnati player win the MVP Award for the first time. Who was this Hall of Fame catcher?

Answer: Ernie Lombardi

Lombardi was a rookie in 1931 with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and they let him go. The Reds enjoyed his services for 10 seasons. Lombardi was the first catcher in history to win two batting titles, 1938 and 1942. He was inducted into the hall in 1986. After waiting all the way until 1938 for representing the team with the league MVP, both Cincinnati Reds players Bucky Walters and Frank McCormick won the MVP Award the following two seasons after Lombardi.
3. When the Reds appeared in their first World Series, they won it all, but not without controversy. The series was marked with alleged gambling, game-fixing, and payoffs. Which year was this that was called, 'The Black Sox Scandal'?

Answer: 1919

The Black Sox Scandal saw the Reds take on the Chicago White Sox in the 1919 World Series. Numerous White Sox players were allegedly in on the 'fix' that they would lose. The Reds did win the series, and many White Sox players were banned for their participation in the scandal.
4. In 1988, who threw Cincinnati's first-ever perfect game?

Answer: Tom Browning

Browning spent 11 of his 12 seasons with the Reds from 1984-1995. His perfecto came on September 16 against the Dodgers. Dodger pitcher Tim Belcher also threw a three-hitter against the Reds that day, but it was overshadowed by Browning's performance. Tom retired with a respectable 123-90 career record.
5. Who was the first Reds player to hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: George Foster

Foster would pop for 52 in the 1977 season, winning the National League MVP Award. It was the only time that George reached the 50-mark, and would retire with 348 home runs in his 18 seasons. The others did not hit 50 home runs in a season during their careers.
6. The Reds moved into Crosley Field in 1912, and stayed there for 58 years. Where did they play their home games prior?

Answer: Palace of the Fans

The Palace of the Fans was built in 1902 after League Park burned down in 1900, and was built in the same spot. Crosley Field was built in 1912, and the Reds would play there until 1970. The Reds went to five World Series at Crosley while winning two. Crosley Field was taken down in 1972.
7. Which Reds player was the first to win a Rookie of the Year Award?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Robinson won it in 1956, and would finish seventh for the MVP in the season also. He would win the MVP Award in 1961. The Reds traded Frank to the Orioles in 1966, and he would thank the Reds by batting for the Triple Crown, winning the AL MVP, and World Series MVP in his first season with Baltimore.
Pete Rose was the next Reds player to win the Rookie of the Year Award in 1961, Tommy Helms in 1966, then Johnny Bench in 1968.
8. When did this 20th Century franchise first begin play in a professional and sanctioned league?

Answer: 1882

There was a franchise named the Cincinnati Red Stockings that was one of the charter members of the new National League in 1876, but this was not the same franchise as the 20th Century Reds team. These Reds began their franchise in 1882 in the new American Association, and they won the very first AA League pennant of six teams.

The franchise joined the National League in 1890 with the team name of Cincinnati Reds.
9. This decade saw the Reds go to four World Series, and win two of them consecutively. Which decade was this?

Answer: 1970s

The Reds lost to the Orioles in 1970, and the Athletics in 1972. They would win it all in 1975 against the Red Sox, then against the Yankees in 1976. The team was managed by the great Sparky Anderson in those four World Series.
10. Which of these Reds pitchers retired with the most career strikeouts for the team?

Answer: Jim Maloney

Maloney pitched in 11 of his 12 seasons with the Reds from 1960-1970. His best season was in 1963 when he went 23-7, but had no chance for any awards with Sandy Koufax and Juan Marichal looming around to take the spotlight. Jim threw 1592 strikeouts of his career 1605 in a Cincinnati uniform. Nolan threw 1035 strikeouts, O'Toole 1002, and Queen 190 for the Reds.
