Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What year was Roger drafted by the Dallas Cowboys?

Answer: 1964

He was drafted in the 10th round even though he won the Heisman Trophy in 1963. The reason for his low selection was that since he was a graduate of the Naval Academy, he had to serve his full 4-year commitment of military service prior to playing in the NFL, which he did honorably.
2. Roger won the Heisman Trophy in 1963. Which other major college award did he win that year?

Answer: Maxwell Award

The Maxwell Award is given to the best collegiate football player in the U.S. The award is named for Robert W. Maxwell, a college football player, coach, and sportswriter.
3. In what year did Roger become the starting quarterback for the Cowboys, replacing Craig Morton?

Answer: 1971

Roger was given the starting job in the eighth game of the season and never relinquished it. Tom Landry felt a certain loyalty to Craig Morton who was less talented than Roger, but had "paid his dues", and did lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl the previous season.

However, after a rather mediocre 4-3 start, Landry eventually ended up alternating Roger and Craig between plays, and decided to let Roger take the reins. It was probably one of the best decisions he ever made as a head coach.
4. How many Super Bowls did Roger lead the Cowboys to during his career?

Answer: 4

Roger led the Cowboys to Super Bowls VI, X, XII, and XIII. They won VI and XII, and lost X and XIII. Craig Morton led them to Super Bowl V, and Troy Aikman led them to Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX.
5. Roger was named the MVP of which Super Bowl?

Answer: VI

Roger completed 12 out of 19 passes for 119 yards, threw 2 touchdown passes, and rushed 5 times for 18 yards.
6. How many times did Roger lead the NFL in passer rating?

Answer: 4

Roger led the NFL in passer rating in 1971, 1973, 1978, and 1979 (his final season). When he retired, he was the leading passer in NFL history with an 83.4 rating.
7. One of Roger's most famous plays was the "Hail Mary Pass" against the Minnesota Vikings. To whom did he throw this pass to?

Answer: Drew Pearson

This pass propelled the Cowboys to victory, and eventually into Super Bowl X where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was a 50-yard bomb, and the Vikings were adamant that Drew pushed off of the defender which would have constituted offensive pass interference.

The officials thought it was defensive pass interference (though replays were inconclusive), Pearson scored, and the Hail Mary has since entered NFL nomenclature as a nearly "official" term.
8. In his career, Roger threw for over 150 touchdowns and less than 100 interceptions.

Answer: False

While Roger did throw for 153 touchdowns, he also had 109 picks. Roger was immensely talented, and due to his confidence, he tended to force some throws. Fortunately for Dallas, their Doomsday Defense was so good, Roger's interceptions rarely ended up costing the Cowboys a win.
9. What year was Roger elected to the Hall of Fame?

Answer: 1985

Roger was a first ballot Hall of Famer. You have to wait 5 years after retirement to be on the ballot, unless special circumstances exist.
10. In 2006, Roger had a Nascar Cup team that he co-owned with Troy Aikman. What was its name?

Answer: Hall of Fame Racing

The team began racing in 2006 with Terry Labonte behind the wheel for the first 5 races, then Tony Raines took over.
