Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1981, Steve Sax was a late season call up. The team he was playing with eventually won the World Series that season. Did Steve earn a ring?

Answer: Yes

During his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1981 regular season, Sax had 127 plate appearances, hit a respectable .277, and earned a spot on the postseason roster. Even though Sax only had one plate appearance throughout the entire 1981 postseason, he was still on the roster, and thus he got awarded a World Series ring. His Dodgers beat the Yankees.
2. Steve Sax had his first full season in 1982 with which team?

Answer: Los Angeles Dodgers

Sax played with the Dodgers from 1981 until 1988. Los Angeles made the playoffs three times during Steve's full seasons with the club - 1983, 1985, and 1988.
3. After the 1988 season, which team did Steve Sax join?

Answer: New York Yankees

Sax played with the Yankees for three seasons. He was a productive player while wearing the pinstripes. He was selected as an All-Star twice and had a 200 hit season in 1989.
4. The 1992 MLB season had Steve Sax wearing another different uniform. Which one was it this time?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

Sax played with the Pale Hose for two seasons. By the time he joined Chicago, he was already on the down side of his career. His two seasons spent in the Windy City were less than productive. His only full season with the White Sox, coming in 1992, saw Steve bat .236 and his 1993 season saw him play in only 57 games.
5. As long as there will be American sports, 1994 will always be remembered as a strike season in Major League Baseball. Steve Sax will always remember that year, not only for the strike, but also because it was his last season as a player in the Big Leagues. What team did he suit up for in 1994?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

Seven games. That is what Steve's 1994 season totaled. I can guarantee that this is not how he wanted his career to end, but when it is all said and done, it is rare that a player gets to leave the game on his or her terms. Steve had a decade of production though. Most call ups to Major League Baseball don't even get that.
6. Steve Sax was a multiple time All-Star selection. Which of these seasons did he earn that nod?

Answer: 1986

1986 was Steve's best season throughout his entire career. He batted .332, stole 40 bases, and collected over 200 hits while playing for the Dodgers.
He played in five All-Star games- 1982-83, 1986, 1989-90.
7. Which of these awards did Steve Sax win during his playing career?

Answer: Rookie Of The Year

Sax in his rookie season hit .282, collected 180 hits, and stole 49 bases. A monster rookie season by anybody's standards. He almost won the batting title in 1986. He came up two measly points shy. His .332 came up short to the .334 average Tim Raines had.
8. Steve Sax got his one and only World Series experience as a full time starter in 1988. What team lost to his team?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The 1988 World Series matched Steve's Dodgers against the Athletics. This was a true "David vs Goliath" contest. Here were the Dodgers, a team who defied the odds and beat the mighty Mets in the NLCS. Then we had the Athletics, winners of over 100 games, and the clear favorite to crush Los Angeles. Although this series will always be remembered by Kirk Gibson's legendary homerun off of Dennis Eckersley, Sax had a productive series. He batted .300 and scored three runs in the five game series.
This was his seocnd WS rijng. His first was in 1981 (when he made one plate appearance post season).
9. In 1992, Steve Sax guest starred on which television show?

Answer: The Simpsons

Joining Sax in the episode titled "Homer at the Bat" were other MLB players Roger Clemens, Don Mattingly, Ken Griffey Jr, Jose Canseco, among others. The show centered around Mr. Burns and his company softball team.
10. Season 2013 saw the return of Steve Sax to Major League Baseball as a coach to what team?

Answer: Arizona Diamondbacks

Steve was hired to be the first base coach. He joined a staff that included other past players such as manager Kirk Gibson, batting coach Don Baylor, third base coach Matt Williams, pitching coach Charles Nagy, and bench coach Alan Trammell. All good to great players in their days.
