Princeton University was founded in 1746 under its original name of the College of New Jersey. The Tigers have enjoyed considerable success on the lacrosse field, with the men's team winning six NCAA titles between 1992 and 2001, and the women's squad triumphing three times between 1994 and 2003.

Franco Harris was born in Fort Dix in 1950, and attended high school in Mount Holly before playing collegiate football at Penn State. Drafted by the Steelers in 1972, he spent 12 seasons in Pittsburgh at the running back position. He was a part of the Steelers squads which won Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV.

The New Jersey Nets relocated to Piscataway from New York in 1977, before moving into the new Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford in 1981. In 2002, they reached their first NBA finals series, where they were swept 4-0 by a Lakers team featuring Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. Twelve months later they were back in the finals, but it was the Spurs who prevailed 4-2.

In 2012, the team relocated back to the Big Apple, becoming the Brooklyn Nets.

Mike Trout was born in Vineland in 1991 and grew up in nearby Millville. A center fielder, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2009, with whom he made his MLB debut in 2011. He was named AL Rookie of the Year in 2012 and, in 2019, was selected to his 8th successive All-Star Game.

The New Jersey Devils were originally formed as the Kansas City Scouts in 1974. They moved to Denver and were renamed the Colorado Rockies just two years later. In 1982, they were on the move again, this time to East Rutherford, where they became the Devils.

The won their first Stanley Cup in 1995, defeating the Red Wings 4-0. A second triumph followed in 2000 when the Stars were vanquished 4-2; a third Cup was won in 2003 when the Ducks were defeated 4-3. In 2007, the Devils moved to a new arena in Newark.

Dick Button was born in Englewood in 1929, and became US Figure Skating Champion in 1946. He won gold at the Winter Olympics in both 1948 (in St Moritz) and 1952 (in Oslo). He was also World Champion for five straight years between 1948-52. He turned professional in 1953 at a time in which the Olympics were strictly for amateurs.

Rutgers University was founded in 1766 in New Brunswick under its original its original name of Queen's College. The Scarlet Knights, who play most sports in the neighbouring township of Piscataway, were an independent school for many years before joining the Big East in 1991; in 2014, they moved to the Big Ten.

The Knights only national championship of the 20th century came in men's fencing in 1949.

Born Arnold Raymond Cream in Pennsauken in 1914, Jersey Joe Walcott made his professional boxing debut in 1930. He challenged Joe Louis for the world heavyweight title in 1947, losing on a controversial split decision. After three more failed attempts to win the world title, he was finally successful in 1951, knocking out Ezzard Charles in Pittsburgh. Walcott was dethroned as champion the following year by Rocky Marciano.

Baltusrol Golf Club was founded in 1895 in Springfield. The US Open was first held there in 1903, with Scotsman Willie Anderson winning the title. Other Open champions there in the 20th century include Jack Nicklaus (twice) and Lee Janzen. The PGA Championship was held at Baltusrol in 2005 and 2016, with the women's US Open taking place there in 1961 and 1985.

Shaquille O'Neal was born in Newark in 1972. He played collegiate hoops at Louisiana State between 1989 and '92 before being selected first overall in the NBA draft by the Orlando Magic. He was NBA Rookie of the Year in 1992-3, before moving to the Lakers as a free agent in 1996.

He won three NBA titles in Los Angeles before moving to Miami in 2004, winning another championship with the Heat two years later.
