Both Bobby and his brother, Jackie Charlton, were members of the England 1966 World Cup winning team. Bobby spent almost all of his professional career at Manchester United. He was one of the survivors of the tragic Munich air crash in February 1958, which killed 23 of 44 passengers and crew aboard the "Busby Babes" plane.

There is a statue known as The United Trinity outside Old Trafford, depicting George Best, Dennis Law and Bobby Charlton; it was unveiled in May 2008.
