Carlos Moya did not participate in the tournament, and Nicolas Kiefer was a quarter-finalist, falling to Magnus Norman in four sets.

Kafelnikov defeated Knippschild in four sets in the first round, and then Vacek in the second round, in three easy sets. Younes El Aynaoui was Kafelnikov's fifth victim of the tournament. Kafelnikov also defeated Austrian Stefan Koubek, Belgian Christophe Rochus, and Swede Magnus Norman, before falling at the final hurdle to Agassi.

The defending champion was the top-seeded Andre Agassi. Agassi lost in four sets to Karol Kucera in the second round. Magnus Norman, the eventual runner-up, took out the 1999 runner-up, Andrei Medvedev in the fourth round. El Aynaoui was a fourth-round loser to Franco Squillari.

Kuerten brushed aside the Argentine in straight sets, and went on to win the trophy, overcoming Magnus Norman in the championship match. He finally fell to Sampras in three sets, pushing him to a first set tiebreaker.

Andre Agassi opened his campaign with a four-set victory over Taylor Dent. He went on to face fellow American Todd Martin in the second round, and prevailed 10-8 in the fifth set. The match lasted for 227 minutes. Interstingly enough, in this match, Martin won 15 more points than Agassi.

Another five-setter was played in the third round of the tournament, and showcased Philippoussis and Schalken, lasting one minute shy of 5 hours. The match was won by Philippoussis, 20-18 in the fifth set.

Todd Martin entered the tournament unseeded, looking to capitalise on his runner-up finish to Andre Agassi in 1999. He posted victories over respectable opponents, in Vincent Spadea, Michael Chang, Cedric Pioline, Carlos Moya and Thomas Johansson, setting up a semi-final showdown with the 20-year old Russian, Safin, losing the match in three sets.

However, only two Americans' dreams of capturing their home crown were still alive by the fourth round, with only Pete Sampras and Todd Martin in contention of winning the crown.
