Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in the franchise's history that was inducted into the Hall of Fame after playing for the Braves, but not necessarily inducted as a Brave?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth's notoriety was mainly with the Red Sox and Yankees of the American League, but his final season in 1935 was with the Boston Braves. Ruth was one of the first five inducted into the hall in 1936. Cy Young was the second Braves player inducted. Young was inducted into the hall in 1937, after playing his final season with the Braves in 1911.
2. Who was the first Braves pitcher to win 350 games in their uniform?

Answer: Warren Spahn

With the changing rules of baseball, Spahn's 356 wins with one team is likely not to be surpassed. Warren spent 20 seasons with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves from 1942-1964. Spahn was a 20-game winner an amazing 13 times.
3. In which year did the franchise move from Boston to Milwaukee?

Answer: 1953

The franchise had been in Boston as part of the National League since 1876. The franchise moved from Boston to Milwaukee in 1953, then moved again to Atlanta in 1966.
4. The Braves' franchise was not always called the Braves. The team was one of eight inaugural members of the new National League in 1876. What was the name of the team?

Answer: Red Caps

With Harry Wright at the helm of the team, the Boston Red Caps finished in fourth place of eight teams in the league's first season. From the Red Caps name in 1876, they changed it to the Beaneaters in 1883 until 1907 when they changed it again to the Doves.

After changing the name once in 1911 to the Boston Rustlers, they finally took on the Braves name in 1912. With another change of name to the Boston Bees from 1936-1940, they went back to the Braves name again in 1941.
5. In which season did the franchise win its first World Series title?

Answer: 1914

The Boston Braves skunked the Philadelphia Athletics four games to none in the 1914 World Series. The Braves were led by the bats of Johnny Evers and Hank Gowdy, and the arms of Bill James and Dick Rudolph who won two games each.
6. Wearing a Braves uniform, who was the first player to hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Andruw Jones

With all the power that the franchise had throughout the years, the team had to wait until 2005 to see its first player hit 50 big ones. Andruw Jones hit 51 for the Atlanta Braves in that season. Aaron, although hitting 755 home runs, never hit 50 in a season. The other two never played for the Braves.
7. The great Hank Aaron set more than a few franchise records. One that he did not set was the first Braves player to strikeout 1500 times in their team's uniform. Who set this distinction?

Answer: Dale Murphy

Adcock struck only 732 times with the Braves. Murphy played in 15 seasons for the Braves and struck out 1581 times. Hank Aaron spent 21 seasons with the Braves and struck out only 1294 times.
8. Who was the franchise's first manager to win 2000 career games with the team?

Answer: Bobby Cox

Cox, who first took over the Braves franchise in 1978, had the helm until 1981. From there he took the reins of the Toronto Blue Jays from 1982-1985. In 1990, Bobby came back to the Braves and had the helm for another 20+ seasons. In 2009, he reached the 2000-win plateau with the franchise.

When he reached this plateau in 2009, only Connie Mack (Philadelphia Athletics) and John McGraw (Giants) had won 2000+ games with one franchise.
9. After moving the franchise to Atlanta in 1966, which year did the team give their Atlanta fans their first World Series crown?

Answer: 1995

The Braves went to the promised land five times in the 1990s, and their only victory came in 1995 against the Cleveland Indians four games to two.
10. Who was the franchise's first player to win the National League MVP Award?

Answer: Johnny Evers

Second baseman Johnny Evers was there in 1914. After making his name as one of the famous double-play combination players earlier for the Cubs, he was in his first season with the Braves in 1914. He won the award over teammates Rabbit Maranville and Bill James in a close balloting.
