Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which number is the ball which is purely yellow?

Answer: 1

The shade of yellow is virtually the same as the 9 ball, though the 1 ball lacks the same piece of white bordering that the 9 has, making the two clearly distinguishable.
2. What color is the ball you hit with the pool stick?

Answer: White

The cue ball is the ball players will be hitting into other balls all game. To accidentally send it into a pocket would be considered a scratch, penalizing the player that did it.
3. In what shape do you rack the balls?

Answer: Triangle

Contrary to what may be popular belief, there is no official rule which mandates the balls inside the triangle are to be put in any particular order.
4. How many pockets are there on a standard pool table?

Answer: 6

Pockets are the holes on the sides of the pool table where the player is meant to get pool balls into. If the player sends the 8 ball into a pocket before they've landed all of their other pool balls, they immediately lose the game. If they land a cue ball into a pocket, they're penalized with a scratch.
5. Which is the shot where the cue ball first caroms off a rail and then strikes the object ball sending it into the pocket?

Answer: Banking/Kicking

This is a tricky, important to learn maneuver for the prospecting pool player. Sometimes, your opponent's pool ball may be obstructing your path to a ball you want to land into a pocket. Learning how to bank a shot is an important skill.
6. International Pool competitive play is governed by which organization?

Answer: World Pool-Billiard Association

"The association" as it is colloquially referred to, was founded in 1987. Amongst the association's executives are representatives from a wide array of countries- president Ian Anderson is Australian and his secretary Gre Leenders is from the Netherlands, for example.
7. In the USA, arguably the most popular form of Pool is "Eight-Ball Pool". The objective is to claim a "suit" and then sink the 8 ball into a pocket. This game is fickle, however, and there is one way to instantly lose the game if a suit hasn't been claimed. What way is this?

Answer: Sink the 8 ball

By sinking the 8 ball before a player has their suit, the game will immediately end and their opponent will be the winner. Better be careful around the 8 ball!
8. What is the name of the long wooden stick a player uses to hit balls on the table?

Answer: Cue stick

Cue sticks tend to be just a bit short of 60 inches tall. Their size for competitive play is dependent a little bit on the exact game being played, but for casual play, a fairly universal height of 58.5 inches is sufficient.
9. In the context of Pool what is a 'scratch'?

Answer: Pocketing a cue ball

Doing this, even if your shot was legally sound otherwise, will immediately end your turn. Your opponent will gain the opportunity to position the cue ball wherever they want on their turn.
10. It is possible to end the game with a victory without your opponent having ever had the chance to take their own turn. However, is it also possible to win the game without taking a turn yourself?

Answer: Yes

In any variant of Pool, if the opponent illegally pockets the 8 ball or knocks it off the table, they instantly lose. In theory, this could take place during their first turn if they began the game, thus allowing you to win without ever taking a shot.
