The Memorial Cup determined the major junior hockey champion of the Canadian Hockey League. Rimouski won the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) to qualify for the competition, winning the league's playoffs to seal the President's Cup. Crosby was the post-season MVP of the QMJHL and was awarded the Guy Lafleur trophy.

The Oceanic failed to win the Memorial Cup, losing the final to Ontario Hockey League champion London Knights. Despite the loss, Crosby was named to the tournament's all-star team and won the Ed Chynoweth Trophy for most points.

Crosby had his home debut for the Penguins in what was only his second pro appearance, facing off against the Boston Bruins. Crosby scored his first career goal and registered two assists in a three point night. Unfortunately, the Penguins lost the game 7-6 in overtime.

Brodeur also had a notable role in Crosby's early days. Crosby registered an assist on his debut against the New Jersey Devils and Brodeur was the team's goalie.

Crosby registered 36 goals and 84 assists in 79 games to end the year with 120 points, six more than second placed Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks. Crosby was the first teenager since Wayne Gretzky in 1980 to win the trophy. On 13 December 2006, Crosby registered a six point game (one goal five assists) against the Philadelphia Flyers to go top of the leaderboard.

He never relinquished his position at the top for the rest of the season.

Crosby's first playoff game took place on 11 April 2007, with the Penguins losing 6-3 to the Ottawa Senators. The Penguins lost the series 4-1. Upon Mario Lemieux's retirement in 2006, the team had no captain until Crosby was awarded the role on 31 May 2007. With Crosby's rookie deal running out, the Penguins signed Crosby to a five year extension, with Crosby signing the deal on 10 July 2007.

Crosby's first fight came on 20 December 2007, as part of his first Gordie Howe hat-trick. The fight was against former Penguin Andrew Ference, who at that point was playing for the Boston Bruins.

The Penguins met the Senators in the first round for the second year running. However, this time the Pens won in four games. Pittsburgh then defeated the New York Rangers in five games to qualify for the Eastern Conference Finals, where they beat the Philadelphia Flyers in five games. The team's run ended when they lost in six games in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Detroit Red Wings.

The Capitals lost in seven games to the Flyers in the first round. The Devils and Bruins also lost in the first round, with the Devils falling in five games to the Rangers and the Bruins falling in seven games against the top seeded Montreal Canadiens.

Grant was the captain of the 1895 Montreal Victorias Stanley Cup winning team, lifting the trophy when he was aged just 21 years and two months. Crosby was 21 years and ten months when he won, and would have been the youngest if the team had won the 2008 Stanley Cup.

The other names mentioned have also achieved notable things. Gardiner, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, was the first European-born captain of a Stanley Cup winning team, guiding the Chicago Black Hawks to the 1934 title. John Ross Roach was the first goaltender to captain an NHL team, the Toronto St Patricks in 1924-25. Yzerman was captain of three Detroit Red Wings championship teams, leading his side to glory in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

Crosby had 51 goals, tied with Tampa Bay Lightning centre Steven Stamkos for most goals in the league. He also registered 58 assists, placing him on 109 points overall. Vancouver Canucks star Sedin had 112 points, including an incredible 83 assists. Ovechkin was tied for second with Crosby with 109.

Backstrom was the only other player to register 100 points, ending the regular season with 101 total points. Kane finished in ninth place with 88 points, totalling 30 goals and 58 assists. He was the highest ranked American player.

On New Year's Day in 2011, in the NHL Winter Classic, Crosby suffered a head injury from Steckel in a game against the Washington Capitals. Just four days later, Hedman also injured Crosby's head. As a result, Crosby missed the rest of the 2010-11 season, including that year's playoffs.

After missing the first 20 games of the 2011-12 campaign, Crosby suffered an elbow hit from Bruins center Krejci just eight games into his comeback. Crosby did not return to the ice until March and the Pens were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.

Crosby was awarded the Lindsay Award for the second time, after first winning the award in his sophomore season in 2006-07. The Ted Lindsay Award goes to the most outstanding player of the regular season. The Bill Masterson award is given to players who show great perseverance or overcome adversity, with Crosby finishing second after recovering from a broken jaw to lead the Penguins to the Conference Finals. He also came second in the Hart Memorial voting.

Crosby won the Hart Memorial Trophy for a second time as a result of his efforts in the 2013-14 season, winning the award for the first time since 2007. The trophy was awarded to Crosby during the 2014 NHL Awards, presented on 24 June 2014. Crosby's scoring achievements were fulfilled in the following season, registering his 800th point on 26 November 2014 and scoring his 300th goal on 4 January 2015.

Crosby didn't win his second Rocket Richard Trophy until the end of the 2016-17 season.

Crosby was particularly impressive, scoring three goals and registering five assists over the course of the series. In the second round, the Pens defeated the Washington Capitals in six games, although Crosby himself only had two assists in the series.

In the conference finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Crosby scored game winners in Game 2, 3 and 6 as the Penguins won in seven games. In the Stanley Cup Finals against the San Jose Sharks, Crosby was the primary helper of Kris Letang's cup-winning goal. Crosby ended the playoffs with six goals and thirteen assists.

It took Crosby just 757 games to reach the 1000 mark, making him the 12th fastest and 11th youngest player to reach the milestone. It was a great day for Crosby, who also scored the winning goal in a 4-3 effort against the Jets with only 20 seconds left to play.

Crosby's former teammate Mario Lemieux won the award with the Penguins in 1991 and 1992. Crosby ended the playoffs with eight goals and 19 assists, finishing second in team scoring behind Evgeni Malkin.

While the 2018-19 season did not bring a fourth championship to Crosby, he did reach a number of milestones. This includes winning his first All-Star Game MVP and becoming the Penguins' second highest scorer in history. On 9 February 2019, Crosby made his 916th appearance for the Penguins in a 5-4 loss to the Lightning, passing the legendary Mario Lemieux.

Crosby first participated in the World Junior Championships in 2004 in Helsinki, becoming the youngest scorer in the history of the competition (16 years, 4 months, 21 days) when he scored in a 7-2 victory over Switzerland. Team Canada lost 4-3 in the final to the USA.

He scored six goals and three assists in the 2005 tournament, with Canada thrashing Russia 6-1 in the final. Crosby won gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, alongside victory at the 2015 World Championships and the 2016 World Cup.
