Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I won the Formula 1 World Championship three times and retired in 1973 after my teammate died in a crash at Watkins Glen. What is my name?

Answer: Jackie Stewart

Jackie Stewart won the F1 World Championship in 1969, 1971 and 1973, and retired before the last Grand Prix of 1973, after seeing his teammate at Tyrrell, François Cévert, suffer a fatal accident. Because of that, he failed to enter what would be his 100th Grand Prix.
Emerson Fittipaldi was Stewart's biggest rival in the early 1970s, winning the 1972 and 1974 World Championships.
John Surtees was the 1964 World Champion.
2. I was the Formula 1 World Champion three times and would probably have won more Championships if I wasn't killed in a crash at Imola while leading the race. I was especially talented in the rain. Who am I?

Answer: Ayrton Senna

Ayrton Senna was the F1 World Champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991. He suffered a fatal crash in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, while leading the race. The weekend in which he died was already marred by the death of Roland Ratzenberger during the practice session.
Alain Prost was his arch-rival and Jacques Villeneuve was the 1997 World Champion.
3. I was the Formula 1 World Champion four times before retiring and forming my own team, which wasn't nearly as successful as I was. Do you remember who I am?

Answer: Alain Prost

Alain Prost won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1993. He retired after his last title and went on to form his own team (Prost GP), which folded in 2002, without a single race win.
Bruce McLaren was the founder of one of the most successful race teams ever (McLaren Racing, for whom Prost won three of his World Championships), even though he was never a World Champion as a driver.
Nelson Piquet (World Champion in 1981, 1983 and 1987) and Nigel Mansell (World Champion in 1992) were some of Prost's rivals.
4. I was almost killed after my first World Championship. A crash at the Nürburgring left me scarred for life, and I was even administered the last rites, before recovering to win two more World Championships. What is my name?

Answer: Niki Lauda

Niki Lauda was the Formula 1 World Champion in 1975, 1977 and 1984. In 1976, while comfortably leading the championship, he suffered a fiery crash at the German Grand Prix, and was severely burned. Amazingly, he was racing later that same year, but lost the title to James Hunt by a single point.
Roger Williamson had a similar crash at Zandvoort in 1973, also becoming trapped in a burning wreck, but he was not so lucky and was killed in the fire.
Mario Andretti was one of his rivals during the 1970s, winning the 1978 World Championship.
5. I was the Formula 1 World Champion two times in the 1960s, and my son Damon also won the World Championship in 1996. Who am I?

Answer: Graham Hill

Graham Hill won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1962 and 1968. He later started an eponymous team, but, as the results were starting to come, he and several members of his team (including lead driver Tony Brise) were killed in a plane crash in 1975. Hill was also the first driver to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport (the Formula One World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans).
Phil Hill (World Champion in 1961) was a contemporary of Graham, although not related to him, and Alan Jones was the 1980 World Champion.
6. I was the first German World Champion and I liked it, because I repeated it for 6 more times. What is my name?

Answer: Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher was the Formula 1 World Champion in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. During that spell, he managed to beat the records for most wins, pole positions, fastest laps, World Championships and championship points, among others.
Mika Häkkinen (1998 and 1999 World Champion) and Damon Hill (1996 World Champion) were some of the few men capable of beating Schumacher, winning three of the four World Championships in between Schumacher's (Jacques Villeneuve won the other, in 1997).
Jochen Rindt was the first German speaking World Champion, but he was Austrian.
7. I was World Champion twice and was considered one of the best drivers of my time. A fatal crash in 1968 put an end to my career, which should have been even more successful. Do you remember who I am?

Answer: Jim Clark

Jim Clark was the Formula 1 World Champion in 1963 and 1965. He would have probably won more titles had he not been killed in a crash at Hockenheim in 1968, during a Formula 2 race. At that time, he was leading the F1 World Championship, which would eventually be won by his teammate at Lotus, Graham Hill.
Jack Brabham was a triple World Champion in 1959, 1960 and 1966, and Jody Scheckter was the 1979 Champion.
8. I was the first posthumous World Champion when I won my only title in 1970. Who am I?

Answer: Jochen Rindt

Jochen Rindt was killed during practice at Monza, while leading the World Championship by a large margin. That margin, though smaller at the end of the championship, was enough for him to take the title.
Wolfgang von Trips was also killed at Monza while leading the championship, in 1961, but his teammate, Phil Hill, won that race and became World Champion by a one point margin.
Mike Hawthorn was the World Champion in 1958 and immediately retired, fearing for his life, after seeing many of his friends die in F1 crashes. Ironically, he died in a public road crash early in 1959.
Denny Hulme was the 1967 World Champion and survived for several years, dying of a heart attack in 1992, while driving the Bathurst 1000 in Australia.
9. I was the first World Champion with a single race win. Consistency was the key, as my opponent Stirling Moss won 4 out of 11 races, but still was a point short of the World Championship. What is my name?

Answer: Mike Hawthorn

Mike Hawthorn was the Formula One World Champion in 1958, retiring after the title. In a closely fought season, he won only one race, but managed 5 second places, while Moss won four races, but had only 1 second place and 5 retirements.
Keke Rosberg went on to repeat the feat in 1982, winning only 1 of 16 races, in a season where 11 different drivers won at least a Grand Prix and no one won more than 2.
Alberto Ascari was a double World Champion in 1952 and 1953, winning several races in each season, and Kimi Räikkönen won 6 races in the season he was World Champion (2007).
10. I was the first Formula One World Champion in 1950. Do you remember me?

Answer: Guiseppe Farina

Giuseppe (Nino) Farina won the first Formula One World Championship, but it was his only one. The following years were completely dominated by Juan Manuel Fangio (World Champion in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957) and Alberto Ascari (champion in 1952 and 1953).
The other drivers occupied the next positions in the final standings of the 1950 World Championship. Fangio was second, Luigi Fagioli was third, and Louis Rosier was fourth.
