Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. By the start of this fight, how many years had passed since Ali was stripped of his heavyweight title?

Answer: 7

By October 1974, seven years had passed since Ali was stripped of his title for refusing induction into the U.S. Army on April 28, 1967.
2. Where and when did this fight occur?

Answer: Kinshasa, Zaire, on October 30, 1974

The fact that the bout took place in such an exotic region added an extra layer of interest. Never before had such an important fight been staged in Africa.
3. What was the name of George Foreman's sparring partner that caused a cut over his eye causing the bout to be postponed?

Answer: Bill McMurray

A week before the fight, originally scheduled for September 24, 1974, Foreman was cut over his eye in the last round of his sparring session. The fight had to be pushed back to October 30, 1974. Bill McMurray was a part time truck driver and George Foreman's sparring partner for this fight.

Originally, McMurray claimed a punch caused the cut, but later changed his mind and said it was an errant elbow.
4. Who was the referee for the fight?

Answer: Zack Clayton

Clayton was the first black man to referee a world heavyweight championship fight. His first active refereeing job was the second Walcott- Charles fight, on June 5, 1952.
5. Which of these was a reason that Ali gave to suggest that he wasn't worried about Foreman's punching power?

Answer: All his major opponents had been harder punchers than George Foreman

Ali said he wasn't worried about Foreman's punching power, because all of his opponent's had been harder punchers than Foreman was. Ali included Joe Frazier, Henry Cooper and even George Chuvalo, who had lost a pair of decisions to Ali prior to the Ali-Foreman fight.
6. How many knockouts did George Foreman have in his 40 fights prior to this fight?

Answer: 37

George Foreman had knocked out 37 of his 40 opponents prior to facing Ali. Like most knockout artists, Foreman believed his awesome punching power could overcome any obstacle.
7. Who did HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant (a New York Post columnist at the time), say would win the fight?

Answer: Foreman by knockout

Larry Merchant said that it would end the same round that Marciano caught Walcott, the 13th, with George Foreman finally catching Muhammad Ali. It was safe to say that Larry was a little off on his prediction.
8. What was the strategy that Muhammad Ali used in this fight called?

Answer: Rope-A-Dope

The plan for Ali was not to run, but to have him use the ropes, slide along them, moving just enough to avoid taking too much punishment, allowing Foreman to tire himself out. The plan worked to perfection. Many gave Ali credit for conceiving the rope-a-dope strategy.

However, he merely imitated what Archie Moore use to do. It's ironic that Archie Moore was in Foreman's corner during that fight.
9. What round did the fight, and George Foreman's reign as heavyweight champion come to an end?

Answer: 8

At 2:58 of the eighth round, Muhammad Ali landed a crashing left hook followed by a solid right cross that sent George Foreman to the canvas. George would not beat the count and Ali would raise his hands in victory.
10. Years after "The Rumble in the Jungle", what did George Foreman call the punch that Ali hit him with that knocked him out?

Answer: A doozy

Although he made excuses at first, now Foreman gives Ali full credit and calls the punch that ended his reign a "doozy."
