Answer: Yale Bulldogs

The championship was one of 15 won by the Bulldogs during the 19th century. Coach Walter Camp led the team to a 13-0 record for the season. The team outscored its opponents 429-0. Highlights of the season included a 6-0 away win against Harvard University on November 19. From 1884 to 1914, the team played home games at Yale Field.
2. AMERICAN FOOTBALL (Professional) - William Heffelfinger is considered to be the first player who was paid to play in a game for a football team. In which state did the game take place?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Guard William "Pudge" Heffelfinger (1867-1954) played his college career at Yale University. The game in question took place on November 12, 1892 in Recreation Park in Pittsburgh, PA. Heffelfinger was paid five hundred dollars by the Allegheny Athletic Association for their game against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

The next week Allegheny also paid Ben Donnelly to play alongside Heffelfinger. Heffelfinger later coached at several colleges in the 1890s before entering the world of business.
3. ATHLETICS - TRACK & FIELD - In which field event did C. B. Fry set a new English record in 1892?

Answer: Long jump

C. B. Fry (1872-1956) was also a skilled cricket and football (soccer) player. His long jump of 23 feet, 5 inches would stand as the English record until 1913. In 1893, he would equal the WORLD long jump record of 23 feet 6 1/2 inches. That record, however, would be broken 1894.

He also spent some time working for the League of Nations and stood several times for election to Parliament, although he was unsuccessful.
4. BASEBALL - How many teams were there in the National League for the 1892 season?

Answer: 12

Four teams shifted from the defunct American Association joined the National League in 1892: Baltimore Orioles, Louisville Colonels, St. Louis Browns (Cardinals), and Washington Senators. Four other teams had previously switched: Pittsburgh Alleghenies (Pirates), Cleveland Spiders, Cincinnati Reds, and Brooklyn Greys (Dodgers).

The other four teams -- Boston, Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia, originated in the National League. Since there were no divisions in the National League at this time, the winner of the first half of season (Boston) played the winner of the second half of the season (Cleveland).
5. BASKETBALL - In which state did the first publicly exhibited game of basketball take place?

Answer: Massachusetts

An avid sportsman, Lord Stanley (and his family) became avid fans of hockey during his service in Canada. 9. RUGBY UNION - Which nation won the 1892 Home Nations Championship?

Answer: England

The six matches of the championship were played between January and March. England would win all three matches in which it played, outscoring its opponents 29 to 0 (the first time this occured in the Home Nations Championship). Scotland was the next most successful, winning two matches and outscoring its opponents, 9 to 7. Leading scorer R. E. Lockwood of England scored nine points, equal to or greater than each of the other three teams.
10. TENNIS - Which tennis championship was not won by a player from the host "home country"?
