While none of the other teams existed in 1983, Sparky's first award came with the Tigers in 1984 with the Tigers, topping off a World Series crown season.

In 1910, manager Jack O'Connor of the St. Louis Browns along with coach Harry Howell were banned for life. Cobb of the Tigers, wanting to win a new car for winning the crown, had a .004 point lead going into the final game of the season.

He sat out the final game to cinch the award. However, O'Connor of the Browns disliked Cobb, and when the Browns played the Cleveland Naps on the final day of the season, he had third baseman Roy Hartzell play very deep every time Nap Lajoie came to bat.
