Turkey made their first World Cup appearence in 1954. They were clubbed together with Germany (FDR), Hungary and Korea. They lost to Germany (FDR) 1-4 in their opening game, beat Korea 7-0, and had to play Germany (FDR) again, losing 2-7 to be eliminated in the first round on goal difference. Hungary and Germany(FDR) also played in the Final match which Germany (FDR) won.

After losing to Sweden only once in their group qualifiers, Turkey went into a play-off against Austria. They defeated Austria 1-0 in the first play-off and then 5-0 in the second to qualify for their second World Cup after a 48 year gap.
