Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 2002-03 was the last season of the British Superleague, but who was the last team to win a trophy from it, i.e. who won the Playoffs?

Answer: Belfast Giants

The Sheffield Steelers won the last Superleague title. The Giants came second by just one point, but they made up for that with the Play Offs. The Steelers also won the Challenge Cup. The Play Off title was a first for the Giants' coach Dave Whistle after coaching in the UK for 13 years - it was meant to be his last season in the UK as he moved to the Iserlohn Roosters in the DEL for 2003-04 (Germany), but returned to the UK with the Cardiff Devils half way through the same season.
2. The Superleague finished at the end of the 2002-03 season. What League was introduced to replace the Superleague, starting 2003-04?

Answer: Elite League

By the end of 2002-03 there were only 5 teams left in the Superleague, and one of them, the Bracknell Bees announced their departure to play in the FNBL (Findus British National League). The five foundation members of the Elite League were: Belfast Giants, London Racers, Manchester IHC, Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers.
3. London Knights were the only team from London in top flight ice hockey in 2002-03. There was to be a new London team for the start of the Elite league 2003-04. Who were they?

Answer: London Racers

The arena the Knights played in was bulldozed at the conclusion of the 2002-03 season, leaving them nowhere to play, as the only other option, Alexandra Palace, was to be used by the new team, the Racers. Many thought it was just a name change, as the Knights were going and Racers coming, but it was a whole new team.
4. In which of these stadiums do the Nottingham Panthers play their home games?

Answer: Nottingham Ice Centre

There's no such place as the Nottingham Evening News Arena, but there is the Manchester Eveining News Arena, the Giants play home games in the Odyssey, and the Racers' home is Alexandra Palace.
5. In 2002-03 the Sheffield Steelers won the Superleague, although the Belfast Giants had more regulation time wins?

Answer: True

The Steelers won 15 games in normal time, whereas the Giants won 16. They both lost 8 in normal time and 1 in over time. The Giants drew 6 and the Steelers drew 5. The main differnce was that the Giants only won 1 game in OT whereas the Steelers got 3. Hence the Steelers won by only one point.
6. When did the Superleague begin?

Answer: 1996-97

It was introduced 1996-97 and lasted until 2002-03. There were eight teams in the league for the first year and the Cardiff Devils were the first team to win it. The Sheffield Steelers won the Play Offs and the Nottingham Panthers the B&H Cup.
7. Which player served the most penalty minutes in the 2002-03 season?

Answer: Barry Nieckar

Nieckar served 150 minutes in all, plus from one incident alone received an 8 game ban. Bit of a bad boy then! In all the top 10 players in terms of PIMs consisted of 4 Panthers, 3 Knights, 2 Steelers, 1 Giant and 0 Bees. The teams shaped up as: Panthers 964 mins, Knights 755 mins, Steelers 675 mins, Giants 663 mins, Bees 506 mins.
8. Which team scored the most goals in the 2002-2003 season?

Answer: Belfast Giants

Giants led the pack with 111 goals, Panthers had 92, Knights 87, Steelers 86 and finally Bees scored only 71. Top scorer for the season though was Dan Ceman of the Bees with 16 goals followed by the Giants' Paxton Schulte with 13.
9. In the 2002-03 season, how many penalties were called?

Answer: 1,287

The most called penalty was Roughing, with 216 calls and a total of 546 minutes being served for it alone. In total there were 4004 minutes served, which averaged out as 50.05 minutes per fixture
10. Who was the Bracknell Bees coach for 2002-03?

Answer: Enio Sacilotto

He didn't have a great season as the Bees finished bottom of the league, and were the only team not to qualify for the Final Four weekend. They announced that season that they were to leave the Superleague for the FBNL (Findus British National League).
11. Who won the 1999-00 Superleague championship?

Answer: Bracknell Bees

The Bees took the League, the Knights won the Play-Offs, the Steelers took the Challenge Cup, and Storm won the Benson and Hedges Cup.
12. What two teams left the Superleague DURING the 2002-03 season, due to financial problems?

Answer: Manchester Storm & Ayr Scottish Eagles

They both folded due to financial problems and it was reported that many other teams came close to joining them. This was part of the reasoning behind the formation of the Elite league, with its wages cap.
13. Who was appointed coach of the Belfast Giants for the 2003-04 season?

Answer: Rob Stewart

Dave Whistle had been Giants coach since they started in 2000. In their second season he led them to win the league and the following year the Play Off title. Rob Stewart had been Whistle's assistant coach whilst in Belfast and before that in Bracknell, so hopefully a good candidate. Unfortunately though he was only given one season in charge, and given the financial difficulties facing him it is hard to tell just how well he could have done with another year.
14. At the end of the 1997-98 season no team won more than trophy?

Answer: False

The League, Play Offs, Challenge Cup and B&H Cup were all won by the Ayr Scottish Eagles in 1997-98, a clean sweep in fact. The Sheffield Steelers repeated this act in 2000-01. The Eagles won again in 2001-02 when they lifted the Challenge Cup and, as they folded during the 2002-03 season that's everything they won as part of the Superleague.
15. The Superleague ended in 2002-03: who was the last player to take the Superleague's MVP award, as voted by the fans from every club?

Answer: Joel Laing

Joel Laing was the Sheffield Steelers netminder, and was the key to them winning the Challenge Cup and League. Hope you enjoyed the quiz!
