Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player's home run in the 1954 World Series, gave his team a game one win?

Answer: Dusty Rhodes

The 1954 World Series pitted the Cleveland Indians vs the New York Giants. With the game tied at the end of nine innings, Rhodes of the Giants came up in the bottom of the 10th innning, and hit a three-run shot against Indian pitcher Bob Lemon. Rhodes hit another home run in game two for the Giants in another win. The Giants won the Series, four games to none.
2. Which pitcher set a record by hitting 41 batters in 1900?

Answer: Joe McGinnity

These were all pitchers in 1900, but it was McGinnity with the Brooklyn Superbas (later Dodgers) of the National League, who beaned 41. He was in his second season of baseball when he went on the wild side. In the 1900 season, Joe still went 28-8. The following season, he went to the new American League Baltimore Orioles (later Yankees) in 1901.

In that season, he went 28-20 and 'only' hit 21 batters. In 1908 with the New York Giants, McGinnity went 35-8. He led the league five times with wins, and was inducted into the Hall in 1946.
3. Howard Ehmke set a World Series record for what?

Answer: Striking out 13 batters in a game

A pitcher for the Philadelphia Athletics, and one season before he retired in 1930, Ehmke struck out 13 Chicago Cubs in game one. He only appeared in one other game in the Series. The Athletics defeated the Cubs, four games to one.
4. Which player hit the first home run in all-star game history?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth hit the first, but everyone knows about him. Frisch, in the first all-star in history, also hit a big one in 1933 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. After winning the National League MVP in 1931, Frisch only hit four home runs in the 1933 season. In 19 seasons, he hit only 105 career home runs.

He also went to eight World Series, but never hit a four-bagger there either. He was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1947.
5. Which of the following pitchers, won the most games in their final season?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Of the others listed, none won more than seven games in their final season. Koufax went out big in 1966, as he won his third Triple Crown, his third Cy Young Award, and finished second in the MVP voting to Roberto Clemente, in a very controversial balloting count. Koufax went 27-9 with 317 strikeouts in 1966 with the Dodgers. Koufax went out on top in a big way.
6. Which player missed his only opportunity to appear in a World Series, by attacking a faith healer, a nurse, and ending up in an insane asylum?

Answer: Ed Doherty

Doherty had a severe paranoia attack in the 1903 season. He was in his ninth season in the big leagues, and his third with the Pirates. The Pirates met the Boston Pilgrims in the first ever World Series in 1903. Pittsburgh lost the Series, five games to three. Doherty had a pitching record of 16-8 when the attack occurred. He never saw a Major League game again, and died in 1916.
7. Del Unser set a record in baseball for which of the following?

Answer: Hitting three pinch hit home runs in three consecutive pinch hit at-bats

With the Phillies in 1979, Unser only hit six home runs in the season. Three of those were in the pinch-hitting position. After being a starting outfielder all his career, he was playing in a back-up role with Philadelphia in 1979. Del retired in 1982 after 15 seasons.
8. Which pitcher threw the very first pitch in National League history in 1876?

Answer: Alonzo Knight

The others listed were all members of the 1876 St. Louis Brown Stockings. In the inaugural day of the National League, all games were rained out except for one game on April 22, 1876. This game was played in Philadelphia. The Athletics' Knight, threw the first pitch in National League history against the Hartford Dark Blues.

The A's lost the game and finished 34.5 games back to the league winners, Chicago White Stockings.
9. Which player was the first to be drafted for World War II service?

Answer: Hugh Mulcahy

Nicknamed, "Losing Pitcher", Mulcahy lost four and a half baseball seasons to the war. In 1940, he lost 22 games in the season for the Phillies before he was drafted, then came back to Philadelphia in 1945. In the 1945 season, he went 1-3. After coming back from the war, Mulcahy won only three games in three seasons, and retired in 1947.
10. Which of the following was the oldest to hit a grand slam?

Answer: Julio Franco

Franco did this in 2006 at the age of 46 with the Mets. Ironically, he hit only two home runs in the season. He broke the record of Carlton Fisk. At the age of 43, hit a grand big one on October 3, 1991. He split his 24 season career with the Red Sox and White Sox.

After winning the American League Rookie of the Year in 1972, he was also noted for his 1975 'shot' in game six of the World Series, that will go down in infamy. Fisk was a Hall of Fame inductee in 2000.
