Michael Owen won the penalty, just like he did against Argentina in 1998, in the 44th minute and Beckham converted it by smashing it straight down the middle. England went on to win 1-0!

As defending Champs, France surprisingly didn't manage to score a single goal, even though they had the services of 2 of the hottest strikers in Europe to call upon. Thiery Henry of Arsenal and David Trezeguet of Juventus. They both managed to score 24 league goals for their clubs in season 2001-02!

Mexico surprisingly topped this group, with Italy stuttering in the group stages. Mexico went on to get beat 2-0 by the USA in the next round. Italy started their campaign in superb fashion, beating Ecuador 2-0 thanks to a brace from Christian Vieri of Inter Milan, but then failed to continue this form as they lost their next game 1-2 against Croatia and drew their final group match with Mexico! They did manage to scrape through in 2nd place though and earn themselves a match with co-hosts South Korea, which they lost 2-1 to a golden goal!

Having been released by his club Arsenal, after only making 4 appearances during the 2001-2002 season, Inamoto went on to become a revelation at the World Cup, scoring twice in total whilst guiding Japan to the 2nd phase!

Having been unimpressive during the World Cup finals of France '98, where they lost all 3 games and finished bottom of their group, the USA defeated one of the favourites in Portugal during their first game.

Senegal continue to impress during these World Cup Finals. After beating France in their first game, they went on to qualify for the 2nd phase after finishing 2nd in their group behind Denmark and then they beat Sweden 2-1 in this game!

After a monumental performance by the Irish, who were in control of this match for the majority, their luck deserted them as they lost 3-2 on penalties! A penalty from Robbie Keane in the 91st minute ensured extra time but the shootout was a bridge too far for Mick McCarthy's men.

Only Brazil and Spain managed to achieve a 100% record during the group stages. Brazil won 2-1 against Turkey, 4-0 against China and 5-2 against Costa Rica. Spain defeated Slovenia and Paraguay 3-1 whilst disposing of South Africa 3-2 in a thrilling game!

Belgium are of course the missing team from Group H. They qualified from this group in 2nd place behind Japan with 5 points from their 3 group games but then lost 2-0 to Brazil in the 2nd phase (round of 16 before the quarter-finals)!

Klose managed a hat-trick in his first game against Saudi Arabia, then added a further 2 goals in the next 2 games, firstly against The Republic of Ireland and then against Cameroon!

Ronaldo took his tally to 5 goals for the tournament after this game, and kept up his 100% record of scoring in every game Brazil had played up to this point!

Ahn Jung-hwan had an indifferent match. He missed the penalty which South Korea were awarded in the 5th minute of the game, but failed to convert, and then went on to become a national hero by scoring the goal in the final minute of extra time to set up a Quarter-final tie with one of the remaining favourites, Spain!

England won the game 3-0! David Beckham of course scored against Argentina, but in this game it was Ferdinand who gave England the lead after 5 minutes with a header, then Micheal Owen made it 2-0 with a left foot finish in the 22nd minute and Emile Heskey sealed the game with a few minutes of the first half remaining with a thunderous shot from 20 yards!

Ronaldinho scored in the 50th minute to put Brazil 2-1 up after they went behind to a Michael Owen goal. However his game was cut short when he was shown a straight red card for a lunge of Danny Mills in the 57th minute!

Ballack scored a header in the 37th minute, and this proved to be the winning goal! Germany went on to win by this single goal and progressed to the semi-finals!

After 90 minutes the scores were level, and during extra time neither team managed to score, so it was decided in a penalty shootout!

The first 6 penalties from both teams went in, then South Korea scored their 4th through Ahn Jung-hwan! Spain's 4th taker, Joaquin missed and then South Korea secured their place in the semi-finals when they scored their 5th penalty!

Ilhan Mansiz scored after only 3 minutes of the first period of extra time! This ended Senegal's amazing progress in this tournament and meant that Turkey had the chance of playing in the final, only Brazil in the semi-finals stood in the way after this game!

Germany won this match 1-0, with Ballack scoring the winning goal! However, he missed the World cup final because he picked up a booking just minutes before he scored the winner! South Korea's dream came to end here but they had done their nation proud!
