Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many point awarding referees officiate each sparring match?

Answer: 4

Three "corner" referees record points scored. Usually this is done with electronic signallers, one for the blue fighter and one for the red fighter. For a point to count it must be signalled by at least two of the referees.
2. Two points are awarded for contact with what zone of the body?

Answer: Head

The entire head, including the face, is a legal target in WTF free sparring, however only foot attacks may be used. Any hand attacks made or attempted against the facial area may result in a warning and/or deduction of points.
3. A hit on an opponent's trunk, or hogu area is awarded how many points?

Answer: 1

The trunk area includes everything from belt level to neck level with the exception of the arms and spinal column. This area is also known as the hogu zone. It is named after the padded "vest" that protects that area.
4. The blue competitor in a match is referred to as "Hong".

Answer: False

The red competitor is "Hong", while the blue competitor is "Chung". The center referee uses these terms to call the fighters into the ring, to announce warnings or point deductions, and to declare a winner.
5. Who begins and ends each round of the match?

Answer: The center referee

The center referee begins the round, ends the round, declares a winner, gives warnings, and deducts points. The corner referees award points. The time keeper watches the time and alerts the center ref, usually with a red flag or bean bag thrown into the ring when time expires. The blue-side coach, as well as the red-side coach, coach their competitor.
6. Which words begin a round of competition?

Answer: Shi jak

Shi jak translates to begin or start in Korean. Joon be calls fighters to be ready. Kyung ye is the instruction to bow. Tae jang informs the fighters that they may leave the ring.
7. What is the lowest weight division called?

Answer: Fin

Fin is 118.8 lbs and under (Men) and 103.4 lbs and under (Women). Feather is 136.4 - 147.4 lbs (Men) and 121.0 - 129.8 lbs (Women). Light is 147.4 - 158.4 lbs (Men) and 129.8 - 138.6 lbs (Women). Welter is 158.4 - 171.6 (Men) and 138.6 - 147.4 lbs (Women). Weight class order is Fin, Fly, Bantam, Feather, Light, Welter, Middle, and Heavy.
8. Is head contact allowed for Juniors under 16?

Answer: No

For Juniors under 16, head contact will result in a point deduction and may result in tournament disqualification if determined to be on purpose. For Juniors 16-17, light head contact is allowed. For all other competitors, head contact is allowed though self control must be exercised to limit possible injuries.
9. Which is not an accepted definition of "knock down"?

Answer: Contestant is bleeding

A bleeding contestant will result in a pausing of the match and may result in a knock down being called, though this generally only happens in the case of facially bleeding as a result of a face hit.
10. A gam jeon that is declared by the center referee will result in how many points being deducted?

Answer: 1

A gam jeon is called as a result of a competitor doing one of a number of things: intentionally attacking after Kalyeo (break), attacking a fallen opponent, butting, severely attacking the opponent's face with the hand, intentionally crossing the Boundary Line, violent or extreme unsportsmanlike comments or misconduct by the competitor or coach.
