The Wellington Phoenix rose from the ashes of the New Zealand Knights (based in Auckland) when they were dissolved after a string of poor performances (5 wins, 4 draws, and 12 losses in the 2006-07 season, poor crowd attendance, and a lack of local players being developed.

The Knights were formed from Football Kingz (aka Auckland Kingz, established in 1999), and were a foundation member of the A-League in 2005.

Sydney FC went on to win the Grand Final 4-2 on penalties (1-1, still 1-1 after extra time) against Melbourne Victory.
