Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. West Ham appeared in the first ever FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in 1923. The final is commonly known as the White Horse final. What was the name of the white horse?

Answer: Billie

Wembley Stadium was designed to hold 127,000 spectators but it is estimated that as many as 250,000 had entered the ground by the time the game was due to kick off. Mounted police were asked to get the spectators off the pitch and Billie, ridden by PC George Storey, became famous as the most visible of the horses in the newsreel film of the event. Oddly enough, Billie was not actually a white horse, but grey, merely appearing white on the newsreel. Bolton Wanderers won the final 2-0.
2. In the 1999-2000 League Cup, West Ham were forced to replay a quarterfinal tie against Aston Villa after bringing on a cup-tied substitute, Manny Omoyimni. For whom had Omoyimni played in a previous round?

Answer: Gillingham

West Ham won the original tie on penalties after a 2-2 draw, but lost the replayed match 3-1.
3. West Ham had appeared in their fifth FA Cup finals in May 2006. How many of those 5 finals had a team from outside the top flight?

Answer: 4

The 2006 final against Liverpool was the first time West Ham had appeared in an all-top flight final. In the previous 4, West Ham had twice been outside the top flight (1923 and 1980) and for the other two their opponents were from outsidethe top flight (Preston North End in 1964 and Fulham in 1975).

1923 Bolton Wanderers v West Ham United 2-0
1964 West Ham United v Preston North End 3-2
1975 West Ham United v Fulham 2-0
1980 West Ham United v Arsenal 1-0
2006 Liverpool v West Ham United 3-3 aet (3-1 on penalties)
4. West Ham are as infamous for their cup defeats to lower league sides as they are famous for their victories. Which of the following teams was the first to claim an FA Cup win over West Ham?

Answer: Swansea City

Swansea Town first knocked West Ham out of the FA Cup in the 1921-22 season when they won a first round tie after 2 replays (the first round was rename/renumbered the 3rd round in in 1925-26). West Ham were in Divison Two at the time, and Swansea Town were playing in the Third Division (South). Swansea Town became Swansea City in 1970, and repeated the feat in the third round in 1999, when they were playing in the fourth tier, when West Ham were in the Premier League.

Newport County, playing in Division Four, knocked West Ham out in the FA Cup 3rd round in 1979 (West Ham were in Divison Two), and Wrexham in the same round in 1997 (Wrexham were in the third tier, and West Ham were in the Premier League).
5. West Ham won the European Cup-Winners Cup at Wembley in 1965. Who did they beat in the final?

Answer: TSV 1860 Munich

Desribed by UEFA as "one of the best" finals, West Ham beat 1860 Munich 2-0 with both goals scored by winger Alan Sealey. In doing so, West Ham became only the second English club, after Tottenham Hotspur in 1963, to win a European trophy.
6. The 1983-84 season saw West Ham break the existing club record for the largest winning margin with a 10-0 League Cup victory against which team?

Answer: Bury

West Ham won the two-legged second round tie 12-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg 2-1 at Gigg Lane. True to form, West Ham then went out and bought Bury's centre back, Paul Hilton. Prior to this win West Ham's record victory was an 8-0 win over Rotherham United in Division Two in 1958, a score that was matched by an 8-0 win against Sunderland in Division One in 1968.

Their previous record Cup victory had been an 8-1 win against Chesterfield in the FA Cup in 1914.
7. West Ham lost the 1991 FA Cup semi-final to Nottingham Forest after the harsh sending-off of which player?

Answer: Tony Gale

Gale was sent off in the 20th minute for a foul on Gary Crosby with the score still at 0-0. Despite the subsequent 4-0 drubbing many West Ham fans recall the match as one of the best days out in the club's history.
8. In what year did West Ham first reach the League Cup final?

Answer: 1966

The last League Cup final to be played over two legs, West Ham were beaten 5-3 on aggregate by West Bromwich Albion, losing the second leg 4-1 after winning the first at home 2-1.
9. Bobby Moore never scored an FA Cup goal for West Ham.

Answer: True

Bobby managed three League Cup goals but never managed one in the FA Cup. He was of course captain for West Ham's first ever FA Cup win in 1964. He also appeared as captain of Fulham when they met West Ham in the 1975 final.
10. How many West Ham players made the 1966 World Cup squad?

Answer: 3

Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters were all part of West Ham's, sorry England's, World Cup winning squad. All three played a major part in the final itself with Moore captaining the side and Hurst and Peters providing the goals.
West Ham's 3 players in the squad was matched by Liverpool and Manchester Utd but not bettered.
