Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I usually sit facing the stroke. I have a box and I like to yell into it. It's my job to steer the boat. Who am I?

Answer: Coxswain

Okay, that was easy, I know. You wouldn't know much about rowing if you didn't know who the coxswain was. The "box", by the way, refers to a "cox box", an electronic device that measures stroke rating and amplifies the coxswain's voice.
2. I am often smelly and wet. I have velcro, straps, or laces. I am supposed to be screwed down tight in the boat. What am I?

Answer: Foot stretchers

Foot stretchers are where your feet are strapped down when you sit in a boat. They are usually shoes, but sometimes they are just straps and your own shoes are worn in the boat. They can get pretty tattered after a long season.
3. I am in the bow. I am plastic. I guard the rowers from the elements during races. What am I?

Answer: Splash guard

A splash guard is attached to the bow of the boat. Sometimes waves can crash over the bow of a boat. A splash guard is supposed to keep water from running into the shell itself and weighing it down.
4. I am usually painted. I should be in, and then out, the water every stroke. What am I?

Answer: Blade

The blade is the end part of the oar which is pulled through the water during the drive. It is normally painted with team colors. The blade is not supposed to contact the water except during the drive.
5. I hold the oar in place. I am metallic. I can be placed across the laps of the rowers or I can simply hang off of the sides of the hull. What am I?

Answer: Rigger

The rigger's purpose is simply to hold the oar onto the boat. The head of the rigger pivots so that the oar can be moved to maximum reach at the catch.
6. I am high at the start, normal in the middle, and slow on the paddle. What am I?

Answer: Stroke rating

The stroke rating, or strokes per minute, is highest at the start and during the sprint at the end of a race. It is usually "settled" to a manageable pace in the middle of a race, and very low when "on the paddle", which is used for moving the boat using minimal effort.
7. I hang off the bottom of the hull. I help steer the boat. I can be easily broken off on logs and other debris. What am I?

Answer: Rudder

The rudder, sometimes called a "skeg", is a two-part fixture under the stern of the boat. One piece is fixed in place, while the other pivots from side to side, steering the boat.
8. I am situated on both sides of a shell. I am stiff and ribs are attached to me. What am I?

Answer: Gunwales

The gunwales are the sides of the boat. They are one of the firmest parts of the boat, as they must support the ribs. They can be stood or walked on while on the water if rowers have to switch places.
9. Many new boats are made of me because I am lightweight and durable. What am I?

Answer: Carbon fiber

Most newer boats are made of carbon fibers. They are stronger and lighter than wood, which allows a boat to go faster.
10. There are dozens of me all over the boat. I help to hold it together. Some of me can be adjusted by hand, but some cannot. What am I?

Answer: Nuts

Nuts are used to hold the riggers onto the hull and also on the foot stretchers. A loose nut can lead to problems, such as popped slides, broken foot stretchers, and damaged rigging.
