Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which club, famous for their purple shirts, were the first-ever winners of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1961?

Answer: Fiorentina

Fiorentina, from the city of Florence, were formed in 1926, and first wore their purple shirts in 1928. The club's golden era was the 1950s/60s - they won league championships in 1956 and 1969, were runners-up to Real Madrid in the 1957 European Champions Cup, and defeated Rangers to win the inaugural Cup Winners' Cup in 1961.
2. The signing of Diego Maradona from Barcelona in 1984 transformed which club from nearly men into the top club in Italy, albeit briefly?

Answer: Napoli

Napoli were founded in Naples in 1926, and were relatively unsuccessful for nearly sixty years, apart from a couple of Coppa Italias in 1962 and 1976. The signing of Maradona made them contenders almost overnight, and they won league titles in 1987 and 1990, the 1990 Coppa, and the 1989 UEFA Cup. Maradona never played for them again after a 1990 drugs ban, and the club's fortunes reverted to pre-1984 levels.
3. Francesco Totti played over 600 league appearances for which club nicknamed the "Wolves", whose kit colours are red and gold?

Answer: Roma

AS Roma, formed in 1927, have a club badge featuring a she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus. Their official colours are Tyrian purple and gold, although in reality their shirts are a dark red colour. Club legend Totti spent his entire senior career there, between 1989 and 2017, scoring 250 league goals.
4. Nicknamed the "Nerazzurri", which club was ever-present in the top flight of Italian football in the 20th century, and won consecutive European Champions Cups in the mid-1960s?

The "Nerazzurri" nickname refers to their blue and black striped shirts.
5. Which club dominated Italian football in the 1940s before being tragically wiped out in an air crash in May, 1949?

Answer: Torino

Torino were founded in Turin in 1906, and their shirt colour is granata (similar to burgundy). They won five league titles between 1943 and 1949 before tragedy struck. On 4th May, 1949, a plane carrying the team crashed into the Basilica of Superga in the city, killing everbody on board.

After that, with the exception of title success in 1976, the club lived in the shadow of cross-town rivals Juventus.

8. Nicknamed the "Rossoneri", which was the first Italian club, in 1963, to win the European Champions Cup?

Answer: AC Milan

Formed in 1899, the "Rossoneri", (which refers to their red and black striped shirts), have been one of the most successful clubs in Italian football history. They won an 18th league title in 2011, and the European Cup/Champions League in 1963, 1969, 1989, 1990, 1994, 2003 and 2007.
9. Which club dominated the early years of the Italian Championship, with nine titles by 1924, but failed to win another in the rest of the 20th century?

Answer: Genoa

Genoa CFC are the oldest surviving Italian football club, founded in 1893. They won nine titles between 1898 and 1924, but their fortunes declined thereafter, with just one Coppa Italia, in 1937, to their credit. To rub salt in their wounds, city rivals Sampdoria were champions in 1991.
10. Nicknamed the "Old Lady", which club won a 33rd Italian Championship in 2017, to add to the European Champions Cups won in 1985 and 1996?

Answer: Juventus

Their 33rd title in 2017 was fifteen more than either Inter or AC Milan at the time (two more titles in 2005 and 2006 were revoked after a match-fixing scandal). Their 1985 European Cup triumph over Liverpool was marred by the Heysel disaster, but they won a second crown in 1996, with a victory over Ajax Amsterdam.
