Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which City did the USA defeat England 1-0 during the 1950 World Cup in Brazil?

Answer: Belo Horizonte

This was the USA's only victory in the tournament, going down to Chile and group winnners Spain in their other two matches.
2. When Scotland upset eventual finalists Holland in the first round of Argentina '78, Archie Gemmill scored one of the greatest World Cup goals ever. He also scored a penalty in that game, but who scored Scotland's other goal in that famous victory?

Answer: Kenny Dalglish

Unfortunately, Scotland's draw against Iran and subsequent loss to Peru meant that they lost out on a second round berth on goal difference from Holland.
3. When Germany upset Hungary in the final of the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, it was the second time the teams had met during the tournament. What was the score in their first meeting?

Answer: 8-3 to Hungary

This group was one of the highest scoring in World Cup history. Germany beat Turkey 7-2, Turkey beat Korea 7-0, and Hungary beat Korea 9-0, as well as humping eventual winners Germany 8-3.
4. Costa Rica provided two big shocks in Italia '90, when they beat both Scotland and Sweden to advance to the second round for the first ever time. Who eventually eliminated them in the second round?

Answer: Czechoslovakia

This was the last major tournament that Czechoslovakia competed in before splitting into Slovakia and The Czech Republic.
5. Who scored the famous goal in North Korea's upset of twice World Champions Italy at Ayersome Park, during the 1966 World Cup in England?

Answer: Pak Doo Ik

North Korea advanced into the quarterfinals but were smashed by Portugal and Eusebio at Goodison Park 5-3.
6. Northern Ireland shocked the World Cup in Spain 1982 when they won their first round group. They drew with Honduras and Yugoslavia but it was their one win that made the headlines. Who were the team that fell to the minnows of Northern Ireland?

Answer: Spain

Gerry Armstrong scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over the World Cup hosts in Valencia.
7. Who defeated eventual finalists West Germany in the group stages of Spain '82, causing a major upset in the process?

Answer: Algeria

The Germans were much criticised after they and Austria played out a 1-0 win, thus ensuring both sides went through and Algeria were eliminated. Very unsporting. FIFA changed the rules after this match so that all final group matches would be played at the same time.
8. Cameroon defeated defending champions Argentina 1-0 in the opening game of Italia '90 with a goal from Francis Oman-Bayik, but who was the unfortunate goalkeeper who "gifted" them this win?

Answer: Nery Pumpido

Cameroon advanced to the quarterfinals only to be narrowly beaten by England in extra time. This is the furthest any African team had ever reached in a World Cup finals. This was equaled by Senegal in 2002.
9. Bulgaria were one of the surprise sides of USA '94, reaching the semi-finals only to be beaten by Italy. However, it was their defeat of World Champions Germany in the quarterfinals that really shook the world. Who scored the winning goal for the Bulgarians in that memorable match?

Answer: Yordan Letchkov

The balding head of Letchkov dived on to the cross from Stoitchkov to put the Germans out.
10. Which Senegalese Premiership star scored the winner in the 2002 World Cup opening match, which handed defending champions France a shocking 1-0 defeat?

Answer: Papa Bouba Diop

Papa Bouba Diop later played for Fulham, and received a lot of interest from Arsenal and other big clubs.
