Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which year was the Giants' first season in San Francisco?

Answer: 1958

At the end of the 1957 season in New York, the Giants packed up and moved to California, to continue their long lasting rivalry with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. Manager Bill Rigney helped with the transition, and won 11 more games than the previous season in New York.
2. In what year did the Giants win their first National League crown?

Answer: 1962

The infamous 1962 season, with the 1 playoff game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, saw the Giants' first trip to the World Series via a 103-62 record. It was the fifth time in franchise history the Giants broke the 100-win barrier, but the first in San Francisco.

The Giants lost to the Yankees 4 games to 3, with arguably the greatest balanced roster in National League history. They rostered the likes of Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Matty Alou, Orlando Cepeda, Jim Davenport, and catcher Tom Haller.

Their arms were Juan Marichal, Gaylord Perry, Billy Pierce, and Jack Sanford.
3. Which pitcher set a team record for saving 48 games in season?

Answer: Rod Beck

Although Nen saved over 40 games for 4 seasons, Beck saved 48 games in 1993. His season win-loss record was 3-1. The Giants' 103-59 record was only good enough for second place in the National League Western Division, behind the Atlanta Braves.
4. How many times in a season did Juan Marichal win 25 or more games?

Answer: 3

Marichal hit the 25-win mark twice, and hit the 26 mark once. In 1968, he was 26-9 and had a stellar year along with over 200 strikeouts. He was still 5th in the ballots for the League MVP. Juan retired with a record of 243-142 after 16 seasons.
5. What jersey number was Hall of Famer Willie McCovey?

Answer: 44

'Big Mac' or 'Stretch', who terrorized National League pitchers, played 19 of his 22 seasons with the Giants. He matched his number 44 with 44 home runs in 1963. He retired with 521 home runs. McCovey and Mays were regarded as one of baseball's most dangerous one-two punches, equal to Ruth and Gehrig.
6. In which ballpark did the Giants first play their home games after moving to San Francisco?

Answer: Seals Stadium

The Giants ranked third in attendance in their inaugural year, by bagging 1,422,130 fans in San Francisco. Candlestick Park came into play in the 1960 season.
7. Which of the following San Francisco Giants set the team record for doubles in a season, with 49?

Answer: Jeff Kent

Although Bonds hit 44 in 1998, Kent smacked 49 in the 2001 season. It would be his third consecutive season for hitting more than 40 doubles.
8. Which of the following was the first San Francisco Giant to hit 50 or more home runs in a season?

Answer: Willie Mays

Mays popped 51 home runs in 1955 as a New Yorker, but amazingly enough, he hit another 51 ten years later in a San Francisco uniform. 646 of his career total 660 home runs, were in a Giant uniform. His last 14 were as a New York Met.
9. Which San Francisco Giant set a team record for being HBP (hit by a pitch) 26 times in a season?

Answer: Ron Hunt

Hunt set many records in the Majors for being HBP. In 1970, he was hit 26 times by the opposing pitchers. He broke the team record that he set in 1969 by being hit 25 times. After being traded to Montreal for the 1971 season, he was hit 50 times. In 12 seasons in the big leagues, Ron was hit 243 times.
10. In what year did the Giants break the season 3 million mark in attendance?

Answer: 2000

The 2000 season found the Giants ranked 2nd in attendance. 3,318,800 fans passed through the gates to watch their Giants win their division with a 97-65 record at PacBell Park. The Giants increased their attendance the previous year by almost 1.3 million fans.
