Like Buffy, Joyce didn't have a date for her formal, but went anyway, wearing her new dress and doing her best to seem as confident as possible. While there, she tells Buffy, she met her future husband, even though, at the time, he was with someone else. "But that's another story," she adds.

As a contemporary of Joyce's, I can't imagine what she liked so much about Juice Newton's clothing style. Juice Newton was a country cross-over singer whose claim to fame was a remake of the sixties tune, "Angel Of The Morning." Joyce always seemed more of an urban type to me. But she was in 1970's teen-age retro mode at the time, so who knows?

Having only recently learned of Buffy's secret vocation as the Chosen One, Joyce wanted to see her daughter at work. She got an eyeful.

As happy as she was to have Buffy home again, Joyce gave vent to some simmering frustration after throwing back a few shots of peppermint schnapps in the kitchen with her new friend from the book club. That friend died later that same night, of course, as a result of an evil mask that Joyce had brought home from the art gallery and placed on her bedroom wall.

Having returned to Sunnydale after his break-up with Drusilla, Spike ends up in Joyce's kitchen, sipping hot chocolate and pouring out his heart to her. Oblivious to his true nature, Joyce offers a sympathetic ear, even trying to accomodate his request for a refill of hot chocolate with "little marshmallows" in it.

Even in the midst of her highly agitated frame of mind, Buffy notices that her mother's skirt is hiked up, revealing too much upper thigh. Hurriedly, before the medics arrive, she adjusts it, displaying a tender regard for her deceased mother 's sense of modesty.

John Pankow played Paul Buchman's cousin, Ira on the long-running comedy series, "Mad About You." And, of course, that show ended about the same time that "Buffy" went stratospheric. It's a good thing Ms. Sutherland had a day (or night) job as one of the most supportive moms on TV.
