In the original pilot, Knight had been a detective in the bright lights of Los Angeles. However, after the show was completely overhauled, the new location was a darker, more ominous setting in Toronto.

Throughout the series, Dr. Natalie Lambert attempted to help Knight become human again by trying different experiments. Some of the methods she used to aid in his quest was a liquid diet so he can rid himself of blood, sunbeds, and an experiment on a genetic level that seemed to work temporarily but would be too dangerous to his life if he saw it through to the end.
