Owen first appears on "Grey's Anatomy" during the episode "Dream a Little Dream of Me, Part 1", where he gets off of an ambulance after having given the patient a tracheotomy in the field with an ink pen. He was on leave from the army at the time, where he had been working as a trauma doctor.

When Owen first gets off the ambulance Cristina thinks what he did was "hot." Then later when he staples his own cut without being numbed, Cristina is even more interested. When she slips and falls, Meredith runs for help, and Owen brings her into the hospital, where he later pulls out the icicle she was stabbed with.
