He went on to star in the TV drama "In the Heat of the Night" from 1988-1995 as police chief William Gillespie, for which he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1989. Mr. O'Connor passed away in 2001 at the age of 76.
