Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert were brother and sister. Neither of them ever got married, so they lived together. Marilla overpowered Matthew most of the time, and her word was law.

Matthew and Marilla decided to adopt a boy to help in the fields. When Matthew went to pick up this boy; he found the orphanage had sent a girl instead - Anne. He instantly fell in love with Anne and couldn't leave her at the train station, so he brought her home, much to Marilla's horror.

Diana Barry was introduced to Anne, and they instantly became friends. Throughout the movies, Diana was Anne's best and "bosom" friend.

In school, Gilbert yanked on Anne's braid and called her carrots, because of her long orangey-red hair. Anne was sometimes referred to as freckles, and Diana was said to have raven/crow hair at times, (Diana has black hair,) but this time it was "carrots" that set Anne off.

Anne was obsessed with having a dress with puffed sleeves in order to look fashionable and elegant. Marilla thought a girl needed only sensible clothes where you didn't need to turn sideways to get through a doorway. When Anne got the plum pudding sauce out of the pantry she found a dead mouse in it. She had forgotten to put the cover over it the previous night. She didn't get a chance to explain to Marilla, so at dinner, as Miss Stacey was about to take a spoonful, Anne screamed for her not to eat it.

The three adults at the table, Matthew, Marilla and Miss Stacey, seemed to find Anne's outburst quite hilarious.

Anne told Diana that Gilbert Blythe would stand on his head for her if she wanted him to. So Diana dared Anne to try and get Gilbert to dance with her. Gilbert didn't, because he knew what the girls were up to.

Anne was carrying several packages, so Gilbert stopped to give her a lift. She asked him to let her off at the corner, and Rachel Lynde saw Gilbert helping Anne out of the carriage. Being the busybody that she was, Rachel ran to tell Marilla that the two teens were riding home together and "holding hands".

As Matthew pointed out, Anne had to hold his hand if she was getting out of the carriage!

At the end of the movie, Anne was in the fields behind Green Gables, and Gilbert stopped by to see her. Marilla told him where to find her, and so he went out back. He explained to Anne that the only reason he had called her carrots in the first place was because he wanted to meet her so badly.

He had known that Anne had only wanted to dance with him at the ball because of Diana's dare, so that's why he blew her off then. Anne decided it was finally time to make peace, so they were finally friends. Gilbert walked Anne home even though he had his horse right there. Aww, what a cute ending!
