Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1950s television show featured Rusty, a young orphan being raised at Fort Apache, Arizona, along with his canine friend?

Answer: The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin

"The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin" ran from 1954 to 1959. Lee Aaker portrayed Rusty, who was being raised by the soldiers at Fort Apache, along with his dog "Rinny", following a wagon train massacre that had killed their family. The low-budget show did have a few famous guest stars during its run, including Lee Van Cleef, Jack Elam, Harry Dean Stanton, George Hamilton and Russell Johnson ("Gilligan's Island's Professor). Fort Apache was a real military camp located in what now is the White Mountain Apache Lands.

It remained an active fort until 1924 and is now part of an historic park. Although the show took place in Fort Apache, it was actually filmed in California.
2. This show started on radio in 1946 and began its decade-long television series run in 1951. Which adventure series about "America's favorite flying cowboy" featured a rancher who used his Cessna plane to track down bad guys in the Arizona desert?

Answer: Sky King

"Sky King" was on radio from 1946 to 1954 and on television from 1951 to 1959. Kirby Grant portrayed Schuyler "Sky" King, who lived on the Flying Crown Ranch with his niece Penny and nephew Clipper, who were also both pilots. King used his plane, called the Songbird, to patrol his ranch and help out the local law enforcement when needed.

The show took place in the fictional Grover City, Arizona, but it was actually filmed in California.
3. The third season of this 1960s-1970s television sitcom started with a three-part episode about a camping trip to the Grand Canyon. In which show did the family ride down to the bottom of the canyon on mules and become honorary members of Chief Eagle Cloud's tribe?

Answer: The Brady Bunch

"The Brady Bunch" ran from 1969 to 1974 and featured the adventures of a blended family of six kids. In the first part of the season three opener, the Bradys were locked up in a ghost town by prospector Zachariah Brown (Jim Backus) who thought they were after his claim.

In the second part, Brown freed the Bradys after he registered his claim, and they headed down the Grand Canyon on a mule train, only to lose the youngest kids, Bobby and Cindy, at their campsite. In the third part, Bobby and Cindy were found along with a Native American boy who had run away from his tribe.

After reuniting the boy with his grandfather, Chief Eagle Cloud (Jay Silverheels), the Bradys were made honorary tribe members and given names such as "Big Eagle of Large Nest" (Mike Brady) and "Little Bear Who Loses Way" (Bobby).

Although the show took place and was filmed in California, the Grand Canyon episodes were filmed onsite in Arizona.
4. Which 1960s-1970s television western starred Leif Erickson and Cameron Mitchell as ranchers in the Arizona Territory in the 1870s?

Answer: The High Chaparral

"The High Chaparral" ran from 1967 to 1971 and was intended to capitalize on the popularity of "Bonanza" as both shows were created by David Dotort. In the show, Leif Erickson portrayed Big John Cannon, who ran the High Chaparral cattle ranch in southern Arizona, along with his brother Buck (Cameron Mitchell) and son Billy Blue (Mark Slade).

The show focused on the conflicts between the Americans, Mexicans and Native Americans during the era and included Mexican and Native American actors in the cast. Guest stars on the program included Robert Loggia, Ricardo Montalban, Jack Lord, Bruce Dern, Kurt Russell and Charles Durning.

Much of the show was filmed on location at the Old Tucson film studios and in the Coronado National Forest in Arizona, although some filming was also done in California and New York.
5. In between "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files", James Garner briefly starred in a television western as a motorcycle-riding sheriff in 1914. What was the name of the series (which was also the character's last name and the name of the Arizona town in which the series took place)?

Answer: Nichols

In the show, which ran from 1971 to 1972, James Garner portrayed Frank Nichols, the pacifist sheriff of Nichols, Arizona (a fictional town which was named for his family). Also starring in the show were Stuart Margolin, who would go on to play Angel in "The Rockford Files" and Margot Kidder.

The show did not do well and was renamed "James Garner as Nichols" a month after its debut, but this still didn't help with the ratings so in the second season, Frank Nichols was killed off and his twin brother, Jim Nichols (also played by Garner), showed up to avenge Frank's death.

It was too late for the series, however, as it was canceled before the episode aired. Garner liked the show, stating that the character was one of his favorites. Although staged in Arizona, the show was filmed in California.
6. One of the biggest sitcom stars of the 1960s was lured back to television in the early 1970s when the CBS network agreed to let him film his new show in Arizona, where he lived. Which television show was it?

Answer: The New Dick Van Dyke Show

"The Dick Van Dyke Show", featuring Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore as Rob and Laura Petrie, ran from 1961 to 1966 and ran in syndication for many years after. Van Dyke returned to television in 1971 with "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" in which he portrayed Dick Preston, a Phoenix talk show host. Hope Lange played his wife, and other cast members included Fannie Flagg and David Doyle.

The show lasted until 1974, with the setting and production moving to southern California in the last season. Reportedly, the ratings were good, but the show ended because Van Dyke decided to move back to Arizona.

The earlier seasons of the show were filmed in Carefree, Arizona, north of Phoenix.
7. In which 1970s legal drama did Barry Newman portray a Harvard-educated lawyer who left the big city for a small-town practice in southern Arizona?

Answer: Petrocelli

"Petrocelli" ran from 1974 to 1976 and was based on the character of Tony Petrocelli in the 1970 film "The Lawyer", which was loosely based on the Sam Shepard murder case. Barry Newman starred in both the film and the television series, and Susan Howard portrayed his wife in the latter (Diana Muldaur had played the role in the film).

In the show, Petrocelli left Boston for a slower pace of life in the fictional San Remo, Arizona. There was no shortage of clients, however, and the impressive guest star list included Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, John Ritter, Louis Gossett, Jr. and William Shatner. Tucson, Arizona served as the filming location for San Remo, and the show was filmed at various locations around the city.

Although the show only lasted a couple of years, it was voted one of the top five Arizona television shows by the Tucson "Arizona Daily Star" newspaper in 2011.
8. The title character of which 1970s-1980s television comedy was a single mom working at a Phoenix, Arizona, diner?

Answer: Alice

"Alice" ran from 1976 to 1985 and was based on the 1974 film "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore". Linda Lavin played Alice, who worked at Mel's Diner in Phoenix, along with Flo (Polly Holliday) and Vera (Beth Howland). The series had numerous guest stars as customers of the diner, including George Burns, Robert Goulet, Desi Arnaz, Joel Gray and Telly Savalas.

Although the series was based in Phoenix, it was filmed in California and featured stock footage of Phoenix sites, including the real Mel's Diner located on Grand Avenue in Phoenix.

The diner was originally called Chris's Diner until it was changed to Mel's at the request of the show's producer who spotted it while driving around Phoenix looking for just the right diner sign for the show.
9. A few episodes of this 1993-2002 science fiction television show were set in Arizona, including the episode "Within", which introduced Robert Patrick as Agent John Doggett. Which classic sci-fi series was it?

Answer: The X-Files

"Within" was the premiere episode for the eighth season of "The X-Files" and was aired in 2000. Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) had been kidnapped by aliens at the end of the seventh season, and Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) went to Arizona to find him, after receiving information of UFO activity in Clifton, Arizona. Agent Doggett (Robert Patrick) who was in charge of the investigation to find Mulder, also headed to Arizona, but he was looking for a child prodigy, Gibson Praise (Jeff Gulka), who he believed would lead him to Mulder.

Other Arizona "X-Files" episodes include 1998's "The Beginning", in which Mulder and Scully hunt for an alien in the Arizona desert, and 2000's "Without", in which Scully and Skinner try to protect Praise from a shape-shifting alien bounty hunter while searching for Mulder.

Although set in Arizona, the scenes were filmed in southern California.
10. Patricia Arquette won an Emmy for starring as an Arizona psychic on which 2005-2011 television show?

Answer: Medium

Patricia Arquette portrayed Allison DuBois, who used her psychic abilities to assist Phoenix, Arizona, District Attorney, Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval). The show took place in Phoenix, in Maricopa County, but the name "Mariposa County" appeared in several episodes. Arquette won an Emmy for her work on the first season of the show and was nominated for several other seasons.

The character was based on the real Allison DuBois, a Phoenix medium and author, and although the show took place in Arizona, it was filmed in California.
